  • Shout-out to Nursing students Valerie Soy and Jeremy Charles, the two students who helped set-up the breast milk depot referenced in this story.

Their piece of this was a class project for a nursing course focused on health promotion for childbearing families, which includes obstetrical nursing care. The kind of impact that Jeremy and Valerie could make is something that regularly happens at IU Northwest.

As Nursing Professor Crystal Shannon explains, "The students identify key factors that influence family health outcomes, demonstrate the use of effective evidence-based measures and collaborative partnerships to improve the health of women and children."

The students pick their own projects, identify and collaborate with potential stakeholders, develop interventions to address the health care need, and implement the projects as applicable.

Thanks Dr. Shannon and all the nursing students who are working to help their Northwest Indiana communities. Indiana University Northwest School of Nursing

  • Kaden Alexander

It’s graduation season and IU Northwest has so many standouts to celebrate. Meet Kaden Alexander, who received his bachelor’s degree in general studies and is heading to the McKinney School of Law at IUPUI with plans to focus on gender and sexuality law and immigration. Kaden’s peers have called him “an inspiration to the queer community.” Kaden spearheaded a movement to bring a chapter of Lambda Delta Xi, an all-inclusive queer Greek life organization, to IU Northwest. He has worked tirelessly to help educate faculty, staff, student and the community on queer issues. He aspires to a career advocating for all-inclusive rights. Congrats to Kaden and the entire Class of 2019. #MeetAGradMonday #ClassOf2019 #IUNgrad

  • Meet Summer Ahlquist, a 2019 grad who earned her bachelor’s degree in English (minor in psychology). During her college career, Summer was a high achiever involved in Women’s and Gender Studies and the IU Gaming Club. She hopes to develop games as a profession.
Growing up, this 21st Century Scholar from Cedar Lake endured some struggles, repeatedly losing her footing and finding it, and holding up others in the meantime. She found IU Northwest to be her security net with a network of supportive professors and classmates cheering her on.
Her advice to students: “It might seem hard to put in so much work and have so much responsibility riding on you. You can always take a breath and push through. It will be worth it in the end. There are always people here for you. It is better to voice your concerns and ask for help, than bottle them up.”
“Summer has truly gown to personify her name by working hard to bring warmth and life to the people she loves,” says a friend who recommended Summer for our celebratory series.

  • Our celebration of the #Classof2019 continues with Mahmoud Ojel, who earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and minored in chemistry. His friends call him Ray. During his time at IU Northwest, Ray served as vice president of the Student Government Association, president of the National Society of Leadership and Success, and was active in the Muslim Student Association and Student Activities Board.

His involvement in student activities certainly did not get in the way of his academic achievement. An alumnus of Munster High School, and an immigrant from Syria, Ray graduated with a nearly perfect GPA, and earned accolades for his superior performance in math in 2017 and 2018. He tutored students in mathematics, chemistry and physics and published research in partnership with Axel Schulze-Halberg.

Ray will spend the early part of his summer applying to medical school and will anticipate their decisions by November. Best of luck on your next chapter Ray! #MeetAGradMonday #ClassOf2019 #IUNgrad

  • IU Bicentennial Fact: In the early history of Indiana University, professors would often travel, bringing education directly to the homes of Indiana residents.

Throughout 2020, IU’s bicentennial year, the university is planning a re-enactment of sorts, with visits to all of Indiana’s 92 counties as part of a celebration of IU’s 200th anniversary. Twenty-five faculty members representing various disciplines across all of IU’s campuses have been selected as Bicentennial Professors.

Professor of English William Allegrezza is hoping his contributions will highlight the creative activities happening in Indiana and spark an interest in literary pursuits.

  • It is graduation season and IU Northwest is celebrating all summer long. Here is a photo of the #Classof2019’s Cesar Garcia from four years ago, when he was just embarking on his undergraduate degree in geology.

Cesar is the quintessential IU Northwest adult learner, someone who knows it is never too late to follow his dreams, adjust his path, and explore new interests.

Cesar has worked as a paramedic and in the technology field, so geology is his third career. When this photo was taken, Cesar was talking about his research with microplastics in Lake Michigan, the first of many transformative IU Northwest experiences, like working as a supplemental instruction leader, conducting fieldwork locally and in Wyoming, Canada and Mexico, and attending national geology meetings. He was also a founding member and president of Theta Omicron, the IU Northwest chapter of Sigma Gamma Epsilon, the national honor society for the earth sciences.

Now that he has two bachelor’s degrees, in geology and Spanish, Cesar is heading to a PhD program in Geology. Congrats to Cesar and the entire Class of 2019! #MeetAGradMonday #ClassOf2019 #IUNgrad

  • Commencement for 2019 is officially in the books, with 830 new grads recently welcomed into IU Northwest’s family of alumni. But with so many accomplished grads to talk about, we’re still celebrating!

Today, we’d like you to meet Diane Henning. Diane enrolled at IU Northwest when her youngest daughter was in high school. Nine years later, Diane is proud to say she holds a bachelor’s degree in Labor Studies. Her interest in this field began when her husband’s job unionized, sparking her interest in employee rights. Now that she is a college graduate, Diane is looking forward to putting her education to work in the human resources field, possibly in healthcare or school administration.

Some fun facts about Diane: She photographs rock stars and founded a nonprofit organization serving those who are suicidal or depressed.

Diane graduated with a 3.8 GPA and is an inspiration to her daughters. “My mom is the epitome of the perfectly imperfect IUN student,” remarked Brianna.

IU Northwest is proud of your achievements Diane, as well as the entire Class of 2019. #MeetAGradMonday #ClassOf2019 #IUNgrad

  • Today celebrates the 60th anniversary of the IU Northwest campus in Glen Park!

Fun Fact: On May 18, 1959, IUN students led a parade down Broadway from the IU Gary Center in downtown Gary, to the new Gary Center of Indiana University.

A large, modern academic building awaited them, known as Tamarack Hall. The building housed classrooms, labs, a library, a 600-seat auditorium, student lounge, bookstore, and faculty/administrative offices, located on a 26-acre parcel of park land donated by the City of Gary.

Here's some photos of Tamarack Hall from those early years. Enjoy!
