  • Via IU South Bend School of Education: Meet this weeks faculty spotlight, Tony Randles.

Tony Randles, a current lecturer at IU South Bend, who moved to South Bend, Indiana from Kansas in the spur of the moment. IUSB offered him a job that he couldn’t pass up. He met his wife, Kimber, in South Bend as well. When they were dating, she had him go to church with her. That’s where it all began.

You may know Tony Randles as a Health and Science professor, but he is so much more. When he isn't teaching at IU South Bend, he volunteers to help the homeless at Granger Community Church. Tony is what he likes to call a poor community servant leader. "I'm very compassionate about the volunteer work that I do," Tony said. He leads by example and he has a no judgment policy. "Anyone who needs help is welcome," said Tony.

Tony and the church community work to do a whole lot more than just give food to those in need. Tony holds a financial literacy class, which teaches people how to earn money and how to use it wisely so that they don't end up back to where they started. “People often come in because they have a feeling of chaos or scarcity in their lives, and we try to make them feel secure and give them the tools to better themselves,” said Tony.

Aside from volunteering Tony is a big Doctor Who fan, and loves to garden. He has a nice little garden at his home, and he produces a fair amount of crops. He taught himself through trial and error. In the past 10 years, he continued to learn everything he can to eventually become a master at gardening. He’s proud to say that he grows enough vegetables to feed his wife and himself along with being able to share with his neighbors.

Tony Randles has an office in the Education and Arts building in The School of Education suite, room 2239. He likes to put out a basket of snacks outside his office, so if you want to say hi, or need something to snack on, you're welcome to come on by.

  • It's #TitanTuesday! The first Tuesday of every month, we'll be highlighting IU South Bend Titans and telling their stories. Meet Juan-Carlos Alarcon, a senior music education major, who contributed spoken word pieces and played instruments on the studio album "American Dreamers: Voices of Hope Music of Freedom", which has been nominated for three Grammy awards. The project was started as a way to raise awareness and offer support to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, also known as Dreamers, undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children.
