"We met in 7th grade but went to different schools afterwards. Our freshman year we happened to be in the same Wednesday night speech class. It was by chance and a little help from a professor refusing to let my husband join another class we were able to rekindle our relationship.

We started dating that semester and we will be celebrating our 3rd wedding anniversary this June. Washburn and Professor Thomas’ speech class will always hold a special place in our hearts!"

"I met my husband Tyler through Washburn's music department. We were at rehearsal for the 2014 Vespers concert, and I was in orchestra and he was in choir.

He saw me from across the stage and (in his words) thought I was beautiful. He added me on Facebook and eventually we started talking. We got to know each other right on campus. We would walk around campus every day between our classes.

Later when I was on vacation in Ireland he flew over and surprised me with a proposal. We have been happily married now for three years 🙂"

  • A #WeMetAtWU story from both perspectives!
    Joseph & Nicole Bryden
    ---
Nicole: “Joseph and I both lived in the LLC our freshman year. The first time I ever talked to him was one evening in a stairwell, he was carrying a bunch of props down the stairs out to his car to take to SigEp and I asked him if he wanted help. After that I continued to see him on campus - at the rec, LLC cafeteria and on the 4th floor study room!

We got together through a mutual friend which made it easier with us both involved in Greek life, because we were able to see each other more through socials and formals. He took me on our first date to a Royals game summer 2016 and now we’re here!

We just got married January 5 and owe it all to Washburn! #GoBods”

Joseph: “Our story began in 2015 back at the LLC. Nicole noticed me and wanted to get to know me better, so our matchmaker Mary Winter stepped in.

After all that work, I was placed in the dreaded friend-zone, so our story was delayed until the summer of 2016 (can you believe her?).

I made her wait a little bit because of her friend-zoning antics, but as soon as sophomore year started we were an official Washburn-couple. Our relationship blossomed over time, and we both knew from the get-go that this relationship was headed towards the aisle.

I gave Nicole a new last name on January 5, 2019, and we are very excited to see what the future holds!”
    ‪---‬
‪Nicole graduated from the OTA program in May, 2018. This upcoming May, Nicole and Joseph will both graduate with Bachelor Degrees in their respective fields. Nicole is currently working for Shawnee Mission Medical Center and Joseph will be starting law school in the fall.‬

My husband and I met #BecauseOfWU... When his mom became President of the Endowment Association my dad was hired as the School of Business Dean, filling her previous position.

At age eleven I (very reluctantly) moved from Montgomery, Alabama to Topeka. Garrett and I attended 6th grade all the way through college together but we didn’t start dating until our junior year at WU.

He should win an award for how long he was friend zoned! Apparently his SigEp brothers had a “Getting Out of the Friendzone” party for him once we officially started dating.

I was always looking for “the one” and didn’t realize he was right in front of me the whole time... What can I say? I married my best friend and soulmate. He is now a US Air Force C-130J pilot and I stay home raising our two sweet little girls!

Garrett graduated 2014 with a BA in Mathematics from Washburn and Juliana graduated in 2016 with BS in Dental Hygiene after transferring to UMKC.

  • Here's the story of a newly engaged #WeMetatWU couple!

    Colin Shaw and Emily Engler
    ---
Colin and I have been together for over 4 years now and our story began at Washburn. We were both students in the Honors Program and we officially "met" and acknowledged each other when we had our first class together in English 300. After a year of being friends we began dating.

We are both graduates of Washburn, him with a Bachelors of Arts History and myself a Bachelors of Science in Physics. He then went on to graduate from Washburn Law as I continued my studies with a Masters of Higher Education Administration.

Washburn meant so much to us that he chose Washburn and Morgan Hall specifically as the place to surprise me at work and propose to me on January 11th, 2019!

Colin had been planning my proposal for a few days with one of my coworkers and he came up early from work to set things in motion.

I ended up taking a break and went to leave at the EXACT time he walked into the office to grab my coworker. Therefore, I unknowingly crashed my own proposal. He quickly composed himself from his stunned surprise and proceeded to wing the entire situation. He took me up to the big picture windows on the second floor that overlook the entrance to Washburn and asked me to marry him!

Washburn holds a valuable place in our hearts, and now we have another memory to add with WU! 💙

After the first time we met, we had mutual friends through Greek life and ended up running into each other all the time and it just worked out!

He is a business major and I am a nursing major. We have been dating for around a year and a half now.

  • Our next #WeMetAtWU features one of our new admissions counselors – Maddy!
    Maddy Gallegos and Joel Broeckelman
    ——-
“Maddy and I met my freshmen year of the spring semester. She had recently transferred to Washburn a week after classes started here and was just getting involved on Washburn’s campus.

Our first time meeting was at a church event, called Gods Bods at the Catholic campus center. For some reason, we both showed up late (like, really late) and sat at the same open couch. Being punctual will never be our strong suit. We talked to each other after the event and then began our friendship

We started dating the following semester, and shared many memories thanks to Washburn. Our relationship grew each of the next 6 semesters as we learned to love each other better in the crazy schedules of college.

Maddy graduated with a BS in Communication studies in December, and is now working as Washburn’s Admissions Counselor, while I graduated from the PTA program, and will graduate with BA in May.

I proposed to Maddy in May of 2018, and we will be MARRIED (!!!!) in late April of this year. We often reflect about the “what if’s”, and we both know that our relationship wouldn’t be possible without Washburn as our beginning.

    Erin & John Larsen
    ----
November 2010, Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library. I was in line to checkout some music CDs and I heard this guy behind me ask, “So you go to Washburn?” I turned around, not really wanting to start any conversations at the moment, expecting to shut it down real fast but being surprised by how handsome this guy was... “I saw your lanyard,” he said. I had a bright pink Ichabod key lanyard I was holding.

From there, we talked all through the rest of the line and another half hour or so after that. We learned we liked the same music, books, movies, etc. He told me his name and major and we talked about that for a while. Finally, we went our separate ways. But I immediately called my best girl friend saying, “I met the guy I’m gonna marry!” She was NOT impressed. I couldn’t explain it other than that.

So I went on to try to find him on Facebook to no avail. He didn’t have it at the time. So next, I went to the Washburn student roster and looked him up by name and major...

Creep status... I know, and I’ve noticed since that that page doesn’t exist on the Washburn website. 😂 Anyway, there I found his email address. (At least I hoped it was his.) I sent an email, “Hey, it’s Erin from the library the other day! I wanted to let you know you forgot something there!”

I waited for what felt like an eternity, checking my email constantly for a few days and finally got a response, “Oh hi! What did I forget?” My heart skipped a beat as I hit send on my reply, “My phone number.”

He messaged right back, “HAHAHAHA You’re cute, let’s get coffee.” From there we exchanged numbers and had PT’s coffee for our first “date”.

Fast forward a few years, John proposed to me at the PT's at College Hill in Topeka and we had PT’s coffee served at our wedding. Happily married 5 years later and still in puppy love with my best friend.

Thank you Washburn for having the student roster for a brief time and eye catching lanyards!! 🥰

"This is the story about how I met my best friend/brother Zachariah Savon King.

So it was the day before my New Student Orientation and I wanted to look good in my ID picture so I went to the barber shop to get a haircut for the NSO the following day.

I was in the barber chair getting a haircut and Zach walks in and all the barbers start messing with him for being such a “pretty boy” and I haven’t met him before but he looked really familiar.

The next day I go to my NSO and sure enough Zach is there as a SOC and he remembered me from the barber shop and we just talked a lot during that day and we became closer over my freshman year and now I am a junior and Zach will be graduating this May.

I know this isn’t a relationship story, but it was a beautiful friendship that turned into brotherhood all thanks to Washburn."

"Sam and I met at Washburn back in 2011, in our Chemistry 151 class - I was a freshman and he was a sophomore.

I remember nudging my friend Kelsie the first day of class and pointing out the tall, dark-haired boy a row behind us... I just knew he was going to be special. We ended up becoming study buddies for Chem 151 and after a while our friend groups merged, giving us some of our best and lifelong friends.

Sam and I dated for about a year, went our separate ways for a while, and reconnected in 2014. Some of our fondest memories are of Burger Stand’s early days with karaoke nights (see attached picture), as well as long, late-night talks around Washburn’s campus.

Washburn holds a special place in both of our hearts, not just because we met there, but also because of the lifelong friends we made there as well.

Almost our entire wedding party is made up of Washburn alums. We get married this August, and it wouldn’t be happening without Washburn University. 💙"

"Karla and I met through mutual friends and began hanging out in a group. We ended up having statistics together Spring of 2018. We sat next to each other (I was hoping her math skills would rub off on me).

It was actually Valentine's Day last year when I ALMOST have her a chocolate heart candy to ask her out. I chickened out but we had a dinner with friends that following Friday night.

After dinner she came back to my place and we stayed up talking until 4:00 in the morning before I had SOC training.

I asked for her dad's blessing to date her and we officially started dating on March 22 when I asked her on Burnett's Mound.

Karla has supported me since day 1, especially when I was running and and won Student Body President. It's true that the president is elected but the first lady is in charge! 😂 If it weren't for Washburn I would've have found my better half!"

    Brooke & Zac Croucher
    ----
Brooke Rollison and Zachary Croucher first met their freshman year. He was a goofy football player who hung out with her suite-mates (and unbeknownst to her had a crush on her).

Brooke’s favorite memory occurred jr. year when as RAs they hosted a pumpkin decorating contest for residents. Later that night, Brooke returned to her room to find a painted pumpkin that read: “Will you go to homecoming?” She’d never been officially asked to any type of dance, so of course she said yes!

That goofy football player had that Dancing Blue at hello. Married in 2016, Brooke and Zac now live in Lee’s Summit MO, knowing WU will always have a special place in their hearts.

"My husband, Josh Rosebaugh, would say our story began during homecoming 2010. I was a participant in the Ichabod Race and Josh saw me along with my ZTA sisters running to the fountain to collect the puzzle piece at 17th and Washburn. We were senators in WSGA the previous spring, but truly did not know each other. Josh was rather persistent after homecoming to ask me out on a date. We would see each other weekly at WSGA meetings, events on campus, and at leadership workshops.

Another year passed and homecoming 2011 was upon us when Josh decided to ask me out to the homecoming dance. I said "Yes!" He was very patient and persistent for a year!

We slow danced to what is now our wedding song, “Me and You” by Kenny Chesney. Our third anniversary will be June 11th!"

"Amber and I met freshman year in the LLC, we’ve been dating for two and a half years. As we got to know each other, we both knew we wanted to go into the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Program at Washburn. Once we got accepted, we had more study dates in Mabee Library than real dates 😂.

A memorable time that we’ve shared together was last May when we both walked across Lee Arena and graduated from the PTA program! All the hard work paid off!!

As we finish up our bachelors and time here at WU, we continue to support each other and grow in our faith. We’re thankful for WU and the opportunities it has given us!

  • It's Valentine's Day week which means it's time for #WeMetAtWU stories!

Here's the story of Jeremy & Chelsea Lickteig.

Chelsea and I both started at Washburn in the fall of 2013. We would run into other in the LLC during that year, but didn’t really get to know each other until we were sophomores.

Chelsea was a nursing student and I was a biology student so we both spent a lot of time in the library. We would talk in hushed tones on the quiet floor and I would bring her coffee as she spent long hours on her pharmacology and physiology coursework. One evening, while watching over her books, I slipped a note into her notecard deck that read, “Dinner this weekend?”

We went on our first date on Nov 22, 2014, and the rest of our life together has really been a breeze. We hardly ever missed out on Burger Stand on Mondays and we would go out every Sunday evening after Mass at the Catholic Campus Center (Catholic Campus Center at Washburn University & God's Bods). And, of course, we were still regulars at Mabee Library, Washburn University.

While we were dating I volunteered at St. Francis Hospital once a week and Chelsea worked there part-time. I knew that she really liked me when I overheard her tell one of her sweet old patients that I just might be the one.

She supported me at basketball games and I tried to help her through the hectic schedule of nursing school. She graduated a semester before I did and moved to Wichita.

On April 23, 2017, when she was back visiting for the weekend, we took a walk through memory lane back on campus. In the gardens in front of Mabee Library, I told her that this was where it all began and asked if she would marry me. We got married that December and now live in Wichita where she is a nurse and I am nearing the end of my second year of medical school.

We plan to stay in Kansas and raise our family here, but wherever life takes us, Washburn will always have a soft spot in our hearts.

    ------
Jeremy graduated in May 2017 with a BS in Biology. Chelsea graduated in December 2016 with her BSN.
