  • The largest marching band in the Commonwealth will take the field in new uniforms this fall at WKU! After years of increasing membership, the Big Red Marching Band outgrew the number of uniforms that were purchased 9 years ago. The marching band is one of WKU’s most visible student organizations, and membership has grown more than 115% in the past 10 years. Multiple partners, including WKU Athletics, Potter College of Arts & Letters, alumni, and friends rallied together to make new uniforms possible.

  • WKU senior Noah A. Stevens of Elizabethtown recently completed the second portion of a two-year, fully-funded, paid internship with the U.S. Department of State through the prestigious U.S. Foreign Service Internship Program. The program selects 25-30 students from across the U.S. for each of its cohorts with the aim of providing realistic experience in the work of U.S. diplomats.

In the first part of the internship, Stevens was placed in the Office of Iraq Affairs in Washington, D.C. In the second part, he was placed in in the Political-Economic Section of the U.S. Embassy in Oslo, Norway.

“My internship was perfect in providing practical, professional experience to augment my WKU education,” said Stevens, a Mahurin Honors College student who is majoring in International Affairs, Arabic and Middle East Studies. “The sense of obligation that I always felt to serve in some capacity has grown exponentially after serving two years with the Department of State. I intend to pursue a graduate degree in U.S. Foreign and Defense Policy after graduating from WKU in May so I am best equipped to return to the realm of government service to continuing working on behalf of U.S. interests at home and abroad.”

Stevens encourages students from all academic disciplines to consider government internships. “Despite the political melodrama that grips headlines, government service is still noble and important work. The people serving in government across agencies and bureaus and departments at every level are patriots and among the best our country has to offer. There is much to learn from them and immense pride to gain in using your skills and passions as a young adult to better your country.”
