  • For Mike Arthur, the journey from rock climber to Hilltopper has been worth the climb. He is completing his master’s degree in geoscience in the Department of Geography and Geology in Ogden College of Science and Engineering and will begin a job in early 2019 as an exploration geologist for Exxon Mobil in Houston, Texas.

“There’s no chance I would be where I am if I hadn’t come here. Everything happens for a reason. We made a choice to come here and we made every effort and we gave everything we had to it. Thanks to Royhan Gani, thanks to the department, thanks to all the people here we’ve gotten to where I’m at. Hopefully other students can go this path too. We’re successful in meteorology. We’re successful in water and karst landscape. We do so many things in this department and this is a new thing we can add. We can also put out exploration geologists if they want to do it. That gives a lot of options to new incoming students that they can be whatever kind of geoscientist they want.”

  • “I had mentors and family who would tell me ‘you need a plan’, but it is not going to click until you make it click. I can tell you all day long ‘don’t do this, don’t do this, you need this.’ Until it clicks, or you come across something (some obstacle), it is not until then that you realize that ‘hey I need a plan, what I have been doing is not going to work.’ When you decide to change your way of thinking, that’s is when you will receive different results,” said Bryan Blackwell, WKU graduate receiving a Master of Arts in Counseling and Student Affairs along with a Career Services certificate.

Despite health issues, Blackwell managed to join Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., participate in three internships with the USDA, CDC, and state capitol, earn a Bachelor of Arts in four years, and now a Master of Arts in one and half years.

“I still had my vision, but like I tell students, when you have a plan, you can still divert a little bit, but make sure you get back on track,” Blackwell said. Read his story of how a change of plans did not change his vision in today’s #WKUgrad feature at https://bit.ly/2SGOo4P.

  • This week WKU is profiling several fall 2018 graduates. We begin with Emilie Gill, who will be honored Saturday as the Ogden Foundation Scholar during the Potter College of Arts & Letters recognition ceremony. “As an art history/visual studies double major with a geography minor, WKU has taught me that any experience, whether in the sciences or arts, no matter how challenging, is an opportunity to learn and improve my craft. I am incredibly grateful to the faculty’s willingness to allow me to explore my career goals freely on campus and on my programs abroad, and I am humbled by the knowledge that students at WKU can quietly, steadily work toward their goals, and their persistence will be recognized and rewarded.” At 6 tonight, Gill will discuss her research, her illustrations and her self-published picture book during an artist talk at Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center, room 156.
