  • Keeley Shaw, Assistant Program Manager for the Kelly Autism Program in the Suzanne Vitale Clinical Education Complex at WKU has always enjoyed illustrating. When the idea came to her to create a children’s book about a character with autism, she pursued it.

Tully and Me, written and illustrated by Shaw, is a story about difference, understanding and friendship.

“One of the kids I work with loves turtles. They are his favorite animal,” said Shaw. “The turtle’s shell is a good metaphor for the autism spectrum- to want to go within.”

Shaw hopes her book can be used as a teaching tool for typically developing children so they see what the differences look like and understand people that are different from themselves. She also hopes special needs families will enjoy relating to the book on a personal level.

Tully and Me will be released on April 30 and sold online through Amazon and Barnes & Noble. For more information, visit www.keeleyshaw.com. #autismawareness #PeopleofWKU

  • To celebrate Earth Day, the WKU Outdoor Recreation and Adventure Center partnered with Warren County Parks and Recreation for a river clean-up on Drakes Creek.

ORAC Student Program Assistant Sumer Odom said ORAC aims to enjoy outdoor adventures and also be a steward of the great outdoors.

“We want to advocate for the natural spaces around us, especially in our own community,” said Odom. “We hope the participants of the clean-up see the difference it makes and understand that we want to leave places better than how we found them so that people can keep enjoying the space long after we leave.”

Students can register for adventure trips, rent outdoor gear or apply to join the ORAC team. A trip to Big Bend National Park in Texas is planned for May 13-19. The group will enjoy white water rafting and hiking in the Chisos Mountain Range. To register, visit https://www.wku.edu/imrec/orac/adventuretrips.php

It baffles me that it’s so easy to get access money from the school that is so helpful. That’s one thing I appreciate about [WKU]; they help out students…”

-Rob Franssen, senior from Louisville majoring in film & Chinese. Franssen received a FUSE grant to work on his film project, The Farmer. The film is the first student film to employ Screen Actors Guild actors in the state. It debuts in JRH Auditorium on May 4 as part of the WKU Film Festival. • White House, TN student Kelsey Redding started interning at Hope Harbor, a sexual trauma recovery center in January to complete an internship for her criminology major. “Advocating for sexual assault prevention and survivors is something I've been passionate about for a while and I loved what Hope Harbor was doing to be a part of that,” said Redding.

One of her main responsibilities at Hope Harbor has been coordinating First Things First, a storytelling event that will take place on Tuesday, April 16, featuring poetry and narratives in partnership with Jessica Folk, Assistant Professor in the WKU English Department. The purpose of the event is to give individuals a space to tell their stories the way they want to. “Their story doesn't have to be one as a survivor of sexual assault. It can be anything from their struggle with gender identity, race, or body image,” Redding said. "We want people to leave knowing that their voice matters and can make a difference,” said Redding.

First Things First takes place Tuesday, April 16 in the DSU auditorium at 7 p.m. Admission is $7 benefiting Hope Harbor. For more information, contact Hope Harbor at 270-782-5014. Read more on WKU News at https://www.wku.edu/news/articles/index.php?view=article&articleid=7564
