  • The Journal of African American History began in 1916 as The Journal of Negro History. For the past 3 years, the journal has made its home at the UNO campus. A recent gathering marked the retirement of journal editor V. P. Franklin as well as the publication of the tricentennial issue, which was co-edited by Midlo Center for New Orleans Studies directors Mary Niall Mitchell and Connie Zeanah Atkinson. Local scholars and civil rights leaders were on hand to celebrate Franklin's career and contributions to the journal, including Freedom Rider Doratha “Dodie” Smith-Simmons, pictured below with Franklin. #UNOPROUD

  • University of New Orleans history professor Mary Niall Mitchell is helping create an online database through the Freedom On The Move project that seeks to offer information and insight into the lives of enslaved Africans and African Americans who attempted to escape the forced bondage of slavery in the United States.

Researchers with the Freedom On The Move Project are poring over thousands of ads placed in newspapers around the country prior to the Civil War by enslavers and jailers that sought to recapture the people who fled for freedom.

The ads can offer insight about the enslaved Africans and African Americans as individuals, little of which has been preserved, Mitchell said.

The database was launched on Feb. 14 with some 12,000 ads. Researchers say there are more than 100,000 such ads and want the public’s help in cataloguing them.
