  • Congratulations to D. Andrew Blankenship for being selected the November Volunteer of the Month! As an active duty member of the U.S. Army and a UMUC student, he provides a continuous positive impact in multiple communities. At UMUC, he is a one-to-one mentor, helping military students and their families find success in their desired programs. Within his local military community, Mr. Blankenship volunteers as the senior vice commander at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Within this role, he has served as honor guard, prepared food, represented the VFW at multiple memorial and Veterans Day ceremonies, policed up areas, and given advice or opportunities to other active and retired service members. Mr. Blankenship is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a minor in human resources. His interests in serving others extends to his career goals of working in human resources and opening a nonprofit organization to help teenagers from poor or at-risk homes develop life goals, work ethics, and job placements. #umucvoices

  • Each year, UMUC recognizes the highest teaching accomplishments by awarding the Stanley J. Drazek Teaching Excellence Award to faculty members in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Today, we are proud to feature Dr. Diane M.T. North, a 2018 recipient and award-winning history professor at UMUC. Dr. North specializes in teaching courses on World War I and on the history of the American West. She says, "I believe education is a natural right for all, and with this right comes responsibilities. My responsibilities as a teacher include (but are not limited to): a deep appreciation for and knowledge of the subject content; a genuine love of teaching to help our students learn and grown by creating an open, engaging classroom environment; and a willingness to change and understand different points of view. I also believe it is a privilege to teach for UMUC as our students are uniquely experienced and dedicated." In addition to teaching at UMUC, Dr. North recently published a book focusing on California during World War I, has taught at San Francisco State University, and has worked for art and history museums, including the National Portrait Gallery. #umucvoices

  • Each year, UMUC recognizes the highest teaching accomplishments by awarding the Stanley J. Drazek Teaching Excellence Award to faculty members in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Today, we are proud to feature Dr. Cord Scott, a 2018 recipient and professor teaching history, government, and movie appreciation in our Asia division. Dr. Scott has traveled throughout Asia and his motto could best be summed up as "have knowledge, will travel." He has taught in Korea, Okinawa and the Kanto Plain, going where his students are stationed and likes the variety of students and locations. Dr. Scott says of UMUC students, "They bring a unique perspective to classes and they put forth a tremendous effort in their studies. I encourage them to take full advantage of their time in the classroom." One of his proudest accomplishments is his book, "Comics and Conflicts: Patriotism and Propaganda from WWII through Operation Iraqi Freedom." As the military often says, he is Semper Gumby—ever flexible. #umucvoices

This is Dr. Martin's second time receiving the Drazek Award (the first in 2009), which is a testament to how he has touched the lives of his students. He says, "Our students impress and inspire me to do my best." In addition to teaching, Dr. Martin serves on UMUC's Academic Advisory Board and volunteers in the community, including teaching English to people in Korea and teaching Korean to people in Japan.
