  • Meet Jan Lee. Jan graduated from UMUC last year with her masters in management with a marketing specialization. In addition to being a part of the #umucalumni family, Jan is the assistant director covering the central region for UMUC's stateside military operations. While in this role, she began to work more with marketing, discovering that she really enjoyed it, which is what inspired her to complete her graduate degree. She had a great deal of support from her family and friends during her academic journey, saying, "They would offer encouraging words when I was working on a paper on a Friday night or a Sunday afternoon. One of my instructors even suggested that I pursue a doctorate degree after reading one of my papers—that was really encouraging!" In addition to using her new marketing skills in her current position, Jan volunteers with a local cultural festival and is now able to look at her involvement through a marketing lens. She says to our current students, "Keep going! It's okay if you have to take breaks due to life's challenges. But even if you have to just take one class at a time or re-start after a break, it's worth it to keep moving towards the finish line." #umucvoices

  • Meet Chantal Sotingco. Chantal is an advanced program coordinator at UMUC located out of Camp Kinser in Okinawa. Last year, Chantal received the Bylee Massey Award which recognizes an individual for going "above and beyond" in volunteer efforts to serve the UMUC community. Chantal set up a blood drive that made her stand out among other nominees in the number of donations received, the monetary value of the donations, and the lives that could be saved. She said, "It gives a chance for many of the marines and sailors who are stationed on Camp Kinser without a personal vehicle to go to the main bases like Foster or Kadena, or to donate at the U.S. Naval Hospital. I am a regular donor and felt it was nothing out of the ordinary, but am thankful to be part of something much bigger than myself, really able to serve those who serve." Chantal has been working with UMUC for four years saying, "My favorite part about working here is being the first line to talk with prospective individuals who are self-motivated to go to school. I also get to speak with those who are unsure, or even apprehensive about college if they had less than a positive experience with education—especially if they didn't necessarily do well in high school." She reminds students to take things one step at a time and uses an old Chinese proverb for encouragement that helped motivate her in her educational goals: "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now." #umucvoices

  • Meet Dr. Alvin Sanga. Dr. Sanga is a collegiate traveling professor teaching math and statistics courses in Guam. He says, "Mathematics has always been my favorite subject, but teaching it is always challenging. What I like best is being able to link the concepts we learn in class to real-life situations." Born and raised in Guam, he is an instructor seeking to revamp the educational system. After receiving his doctoral degree in Educational Leadership for Social Justice from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Dr. Sanga returned to Guam and began teaching for UMUC. He says, "My favorite thing about teaching UMUC students, is being able to assist them with achieving their academic goals. When it comes to math, some students have a difficult time processing the concepts and as a result they become stressed about it. I try to assist students with relieving math and test anxiety by offering techniques that could relax them for those stressful situations." In addition to teaching for UMUC, Dr. Sanga assisted in the development of a mentorship program for high school students in Guam, serves as a mentor YouTube channel creator, and mentors new teachers in Guam's public school system. Serving his community is integral in his life and he really enjoys sharing these experiences with his students. He said, "I value the ability to share our individual stories and the ability to serve our service members and their families while they are here. I love sharing about my home island of Guam and how they could experience the island to its fullest potential." #umucvoices

  • Meet Kelly Steveson. Kelly is a UMUC alumnus who began taking classes in 2016. This past May he completed a certificate in Japanese Studies. Kelly enjoys volunteering in his community as it allows him to assist military spouses and veterans. He started volunteering for the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 2010, and is now the Junior Vice Commander/Service Officer for Post 9555 Yokota Air Base. In this role, he provides counseling and education guidance for all veterans in the Yokota area, helping them transition to civilian life and guiding them through the VA's process for enrolling at UMUC. Kelly also began working with the Retired Activities Office in the Airman Family Readiness Center on base, aiding the retired community as well as assisting widows and veterans. If that's not enough, he also helps retirees in the community with medical and work advice. Kelly shares that he often “sees people at their most vulnerable state. It is a great feeling when we can make them feel at ease knowing we are going to hold their hand through the process.“ Congratulations on your academic achievement, Kelly, and thank you for your willingness to help others! #umucvoices

  • Each year, UMUC recognizes the highest teaching accomplishments by presenting the Stanley J. Drazek Teaching Excellence Award to faculty members in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Today, we are proud to feature Denise DiStefano, a 2019 recipient and collegiate professor, who teaches business in our Europe division. Denise has been at the forefront of innovation as changes in technology have provided unique opportunities in the classroom. She said, “At the end of my time with my students, I want them to have gained knowledge, proficiency, and interest in the course subject matter; developed or increased their curiosity for learning in general; and have practiced and honed their analytical reasoning skills." Since 1998, Denise has taught students in Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy using face-to-face, online, hybrid, and live streaming formats. She earned a BA in Communication and JD from American University; a BS in Computer Studies from UMUC; and an LLM from the University of Heidelberg. Denise says, "If students are sitting in my class, it means they've made an effort—and sometimes a substantial one—to be there. Despite any personal, professional, or academic challenges, they get themselves to class. And in that way, class session by class session, course by course, and year by year, they get closer to completing their degrees. What an honor it is to watch them walk across the stage at commencement!" #umucvoices
