  • December Commencement Information Update from
Catherine A. Davy, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs:

Standing shoulder-to-shoulder, when former Chancellor Dan Little and I first stepped into the Crisler Center to walk the aisle for UM-Dearborn's commencement in the spring of 2016, we said to each other: "This is what graduation should look like. This is what our students deserve."

The university decided to move its spring commencement to Crisler Center, in Ann Arbor, in 2016 because our graduating classes had grown to the point where we could not provide a fair amount of tickets for our graduates and UM-Dearborn’s Fieldhouse was not the location to celebrate and recognize such an important accomplishment for our students and guests.

This student-centered sentiment ultimately informed the decision to hold one UM-Dearborn graduation ceremony beginning with this academic year. In an attempt to consult widely, we admittedly tarried too long before making the announcement last week. For this we apologize.

University leadership has read every email and social media post related to the decision to eliminate the December commencement ceremony. Some students shared stories of hardships related to timing of the decision to eliminate the December commencement.

University leadership has modified its decision regarding the December commencement ceremony. There will be a December 2019 ceremony as planned. Moving forward, the December ceremony will be eliminated starting with December 2021. The Registrar’s Office will communicate to eligible students this fall regarding December commencement registration.

The decisions to eliminate the December commencement ceremony remain the same as previously communicated. It is our hope that our modified decision will allow more students time to better prepare for a student-centered, festive, and appropriate celebration deserving of the hard work and accomplishment of UM-Dearborn students.

On behalf of senior leadership, I want to thank the campus community for your thoughtful comments.

  • A message from Catherine A. Davy, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs:

After much thought and discussion with senior leaders, deans, Faculty Senate leadership, Student Government, and the Alumni Society Board chair, the decision was made to host one UM-Dearborn commencement ceremony, which will take place in the spring. The university will not hold a December commencement ceremony going forward, including this year, December 2019.

The spring commencement ceremony has been held at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor since 2016. It is generally agreed that hosting the ceremony at the Crisler Center has elevated the atmosphere of the commencement celebration for our students and their families and guests. The overall celebratory environment at the Crisler Center reflects more appropriate recognition of our students’ efforts and accomplishments during their time at UM-Dearborn. Hosting the ceremony at Crisler has also allowed all four colleges to celebrate as one university with a seating capacity that affords students a generous number of tickets for their guests.

Beginning with the spring 2020 commencement, the university will host one ceremony for undergraduates and another for graduate and doctoral students, both at Crisler Center. Many people on campus are exploring ways to create an even more memorable experience for our students and guests while shortening the length of the event.

Moving to one ceremony will allow for substantial financial savings that will be redirected to increase student financial aid and support student success initiatives.

NOTE: Going forward, students who would otherwise graduate in December will have the option of participating in commencement the spring prior to their December graduation date or in the spring following it.

Information with regard to those who are eligible to graduate this coming academic year, as well as detailed instructions regarding how to apply to participate in the April 2020 commencement ceremony, can be found here: https://umdearborn.edu/students/registration-records/graduation-commencement/commencement-eligibility

Students who have questions about the commencement changes may contact the University Information Desk at 313-583-6330 or decembercommencement@umich.edu.

The University of Michigan-Dearborn community looks forward to a memorable commencement ceremony in the spring.

  • The UM-Dearborn Police and Public Safety Department and the Office of Emergency Management are hosting an active attacker exercise tomorrow, August 8, 2019. The exercise will take place between 7 am-6 pm, in the CASL building.

The exercise will allow the university to practice our overall emergency response plans and to continue to refine our response to an active attacker situation with external agencies.

During the exercise there will be a large police, fire and EMS presence on campus. Agencies will be practicing various tactics. In order to make this exercise as realistic as possible simulated gunfire will occur, you should expect loud sounds and real movements of first responders.

Please note the CASL building will be closed on August 8th. Parking lots E7, a portion of lot E6 and F, campus roads and campus entrances/exits will also be affected. Please see the map below for details.

Thank you for your cooperation and support with our ongoing preparedness and training efforts.
