  • “The emotions were on overdrive at that point. It was appreciated more than they will ever know.” -Jim Widner, director of Jazz studies in the UMSL College of Fine Arts and Communication.

At his final Greater St. Louis Jazz Festival before retiring, Widner's colleagues and students surprised him with “Mister Quarter Note,” a chart commissioned by Widner’s students and written in his honor by friend and fellow bass player John Clayton.

That was an even bigger surprise than the one he received just two days earlier, when Mayor Lyda Krewson officially proclaimed April 11, 2019, as Jim Widner Jazz Education Day in St. Louis.

  • “It was so surreal. That was where a dream died, but we can keep it and maintain it," said Lucy Grimshaw of her experience at the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, where a bullet fired from the boarding house across the street ended Martin Luther King Jr.’s life on April 4, 1968.

The UMSL freshman was one of 20 UMSL students who took part in a inaugural Civil Rights Tour over spring break. It was a three-day, 10-site crash course through Memphis, Birmingham, Selma and Montgomery.

That’s a real tragedy,” said Eva Colberg about the Whitney R. Harris World Ecology Center where she is an outreach/social media GA and a doctoral student. Through programs such as Science Distilled STL, she hopes to bring digestible science to the people.

  • UMSL College of Business Administration alumnus John Nichols aka @LaJethroJenkins took a risk and left his career of eight years in the UMSL Office of Admissions to go to art school in Atlanta.

“The only thing I really fear is being old and life passing by with regret. I cannot exist like that. The things that I loved as a kid – drawing, creating, basketball – I still enjoy. Those things don’t go anywhere. I think there is a reason you have that. It would be shameful not to follow it. It’s a shame not to follow what you’ve been led to do,” Nichols explained.

Within a year, his plans changed again.

But other people will tell you that, every time they called, Mr. Mitchell was there. He must have had a time machine because there is no way he could’ve been here for all of them and been there for us, too,” said Vernon C. Mitchell Jr. about his father, Vernon C. Mitchell Sr.

  • “I think most people that work in biology really enjoy sharing with others the things we think are cool about nature. If we can do it in a way that sparks curiosity or joy or deepens the appreciation for the natural world, that is one of the most rewarding feelings that we can experience in this profession,” PhD and Whitney R. Harris World Ecology Center student Juan Moreira-Hernández.
