  • Most of the New Student Move-In Day madness has ended as our new Redhawks settle in.

We want to give a big WELCOME to all the new Redhawks who joined us on campus today and a huge THANK YOU to all the student organizations, teams, and individual volunteers who spent their day carrying heavy boxes, riding crowded elevators, and climbing many, many flights of stairs.

Check out the Move-In Day photo album at https://www.facebook.com/pg/SEMissouriState/photos/?tab=album&album_id=10157669225198679

  • Southeast nursing student Chelsey Milashoski is getting hands-on experience as student nurse intern with the Acute OB Delivery Unit at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.

Her internship with OSF allows her to put into practice the skills and knowledge she’s learned about caring for new mothers, newborns and their families during this special time in their lives. "Every day is different, which makes nursing a lot of fun,” she said.

Milashoski credits much of her success at OSF to the faculty and clinical opportunities at Southeast. The personal support and dynamic nursing program instilled the confidence she needed to apply for and pursue a student nurse internship, she said.

“The faculty in the Department of Nursing are the best of the best,” she said. “Throughout clinical days in my first two semesters, my instructors pushed me with supportive arms to be the best that I can be. They gave me confidence that I carry with me and always will.”

  • If you scored some awesome deals on Prime Day, you may have one Southeast student to thank. Computer Science major Grant Reid is spending his summer as a software development engineer intern at Amazon in Seattle.

“Amazon is a huge company filled with very smart people and their cloud services are cutting edge and industry leading. I have never worked for a company this size, so I’m getting some great experience with huge systems,” he said.

Every day brings new challenges, but Reid credits much of his success at Amazon to the computer science and honors courses he’s taken and student organizations he’s involved with at Southeast, preparing him for this real-life industry opportunity.

“The challenges of the Jane Stephen Honors Program have helped with my education immensely,” he said. “I’m also a member of the Computer Science Club and Competitive Programming Team, which have really prepared me for applying and interviewing for software engineer jobs. The problems that we tackle in competitive programming were basically the interview questions, and that helped me get where I am today.”

Her day-to-day activities include assisting with feeding, husbandry and cleaning, learning techniques used by the lab group; attending daily research seminars by faculty and doctoral students; participating in conferences about the latest advancements in microbiology and medicine; assisting in the lab; and attending REU meetings.

“After experiencing what biological research was like (in Dr. Ellermeier’s lab), I knew that research was where I was meant to be,” said Jenna, who started out as a nursing major. “I was immediately called to it. I never looked back.”

  • Where can a mathematics degree take you? For Southeast alumnus Michael Porter, it's taken him around the world.

Before launching his military career, Porter earned a Master of Natural Science in mathematics in 1992 and Bachelor of Arts in mathematics and Bachelor of Science in mathematics, both in 1990, all from Southeast. He then started as a submariner for the U.S. Navy.

Porter is currently chief systems engineer, overseeing a more than $4 billion intelligence satellite program at the National Reconnaissance Office in Chantilly, Virginia.

"I grew up in Missouri and initially started at a different college but decided that Southeast was a better fit for me," he said. "I had fantastic professors at Southeast. That, coupled with smaller class sizes was very beneficial. I still keep in touch with some of my professors. Dr. Hamner Hill, now interim dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, taught a symbolic logic course in what was then the Department of Philosophy, and it totally revolutionized my thoughts about abstract mathematics."
