  • The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has earned a $11.85 million grant to establish a research center focused on understanding and addressing drug addiction in the rural Midwest. “The patterns of drug use addiction in the Midwest are so different from those on either coast or in Appalachia,” said center director Kirk Dombrowski, John Bruhn Professor of sociology. “This will be the only major research center in the country that focuses specifically on rural drug use in the Midwest.” ›› http://ow.ly/kQ7n50rRbvP #InOurGritOurGlory

  • Last week's Homerathon featured a marathon reading of Homer’s “The Odyssey," free food and even a pool noodle fight. But the event also offered more than just entertainment for the students who organized it. “It’s done so much for me, which people probably don’t really understand since I’m majoring in fisheries and wildlife, but it has been such a learning experience and I think it’s made me a better student and a better person,” said senior Brooke Mott. “It has made me much more confident and competent when speaking with people I don’t know, how to form working relationships and budget.” The event also invited veterans groups to participate and collected donations for Nebraska flood recovery. • A new research and outreach program led by Nebraska’s Department of Sociology is engaging middle-school youth with science in novel ways, with the aim of increasing curiosity and interest in health careers. One key objective is developing and implementing informal science activities in after-school clubs. “We want to expand the pool of youth who consider health careers by getting them excited about the possibilities, especially by having a college undergraduate mentor,” said Julia McQuillan professor and chair of the Department of Sociology and principal investigator on the project. And it was an inspirational homecoming for sophomore computer science and mathematics major Shreeya Vaitla. “I never expected to see someone from my hometown in India talking here in the same place where I’m studying,” Vaitla said. “This was a tremendous experience and reflects the importance of the university. • Earlier this month, Nebraska students in the History Harvest course spent time meeting with Zoo Bar patrons, musicians and staff to record oral histories, photograph and archive memorabilia and practice first-hand the techniques of preserving the past. Started in 2010, the History Harvest project looks to teach students about digital archiving and to raise visibility and public conversation about history and its meaning, as well as provide a new foundation of publicly available material for historical study, K-12 instruction, and lifelong learning. “This project is always a win-win-win, with community, students and the university all benefitting,” doctoral student Michael Dick said. “But everyone we’ve come in contact with has been so appreciative and it’s music, which is really cool to do.” ›› http://ow.ly/rsKa30ohkus

  • From redesigned gowns to a split undergraduate ceremony, Nebraska is establishing new commencement traditions as part of its yearlong, 150th anniversary celebration.

Importantly, starting May 4, all spring commencements at Nebraska will feature two undergraduate events — one in the morning, the other in the afternoon — with specific college assignments for each. The split ceremony will help the university better accommodate growth in degrees awarded and reduce the amount of time graduates, families and visitors have to spend in the arena.
