  • “During my time here, I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of several organizations. I’m a member of the pre-medical fraternity, Phi Delta Epsilon as well as Blue Key Honor Society. In Blue Key Honor Society, I held the position of Joy Prom Chair. Joy Prom is a prom through the Washoe School District for students with physical cognitive disabilities. That actually happened just this last weekend. It was really worth seeing everyone smiling and all of the kids being the center of everyone’s focus, the stars of the show.

"I’m from Las Vegas so moving up here was a big change. My family wasn’t the happiest with my decision at first. They didn’t necessarily want me to leave but they’ve always been super supportive of me. I think being here at UNR specifically, gave me different perspectives, introduced me to so many people and mentors that have guided me along my path. If I had stayed in Las Vegas, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have accomplished nearly everything I set out to do here. Being here, I’ve realized what I am capable of and how to really use my time effectively to support my interests and passions.”

    - Lizeth Acosta is a graduating senior, majored in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Acosta is a TRiO Scholar and has worked on campus in Professor Dean Burkin’s Muscular Dystrophy Lab, as a discussion leader in Professor Thomas Parchman’s genetics classes and in the Children and Family Recourse Center. She is currently in the process of applying to medical school for the 2020 cycle.

  • “I chose to go to UNR for my Master’s degree in Student Affairs Administration because of the focus on professional development. I really wanted to prepare myself for my future career. I knew it was going to be a little ways from my home in Alma, Arkansas but I was ready for the new experience.

My undergraduate degrees were in Psychology, Sociology and Criminal Justice. I chose to study Student Affairs Administration because I noticed the impact student leaders had on me during my undergraduate studies. I wanted to do the same for other students and use my background to transition into the role of Graduate Resident Director. I just accepted a full-time position at Florida Gulf University as a Resident Director. This was a great stepping stone for not only me but for all of the students.

During my time here, I immediately noticed how involved the campus community was and how quickly everyone was to be there for each other. After the shooting in Las Vegas, I went to the Candlelight Vigil. It was packed and the lines were so long. It really impacted me to see all the students care for each other and have that spirit to be part of the Wolf Pack.” – Mason Sims is a graduating Master’s student from Alma, Arkansas.

  • "As a senior in High School, I had no idea what I wanted to major in. When I went to Nevada Bound, that’s when I found out about CABNR and the Nutritional Science major. I remember one of my professors had a lecture about the prevalence of food insecurity and food desert, especially in Nevada.

After doing some research, I found out about our campus pantry, Pack Provisions. I wanted to pay it forward, so I decided to get involved in my freshman year as a volunteer. I’m currently the student Director and this service-learning opportunity has become the most inspiring experience of my undergrad. We started with three volunteers and now we have 24 committed volunteers who help with outreach and awareness efforts. We went from 78 visits in the first year to 1,263 this school year. Not only are we meeting the needs of our campus, but we are also reducing the stigma around food insecurity and promoting wellness instead. Through this experience, I learned the power of collective efforts. Students, faculty, and staff are joining our mission to fight against hunger. Students are spreading the word to their colleagues. Faculty and staff are referring students, some even include it in their lectures and syllabi. Clubs and organizations are initiating drives. Local business and non-profits are helping out as well. I am so grateful for all the support our University and this community has given this program.

Through studying the science and research base of nutrition, I discovered I would like to continue a career in pharmacy. I’m starting my Doctorate in Pharmacy this fall at Roseman University of Health Sciences." - Karissa Mendaros is a graduating Senior from Las Vegas, Nevada. • “I studied Journalism at The Reynolds School. I focused on Strategic Communications because I wanted to learn how to communicate with people effectively and creatively.

I recently worked on the Speak Safe campaign. It’s the project I've had the most pride in during my time at UNR. We created this campaign to educate sexual assault survivors on the resources available to them. We made a website and social media for this campaign so survivors can reach out to us. We’ve had so much support from the campus community, especially with our Denim Square initiative to support survivors.

In college, I joined TRiO Scholars, a program that helps First-Generation college students. I also worked for their sister program, Upward Bound, which helps First-Gen, Low-Income high school students prepare for college. I was a part of Upward Bound in high school, so it's amazing to have come full circle, going from being a part of the program to working for them.

This semester, I had an internship through The Reynolds School with HackerX. They just offered me a full-time position after graduation. I'm excited to start right away.” – Jennifer Scriver is a graduating senior from Reno, Nevada.
