  • Senior biochemistry major Bao Nguyen spent the summer doing research at Dartmouth through ISURF. This competitive Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (ISURF) program provides a ~10 week summer research experience for undergraduate students. This full-time, immersion experience is designed for students who wish to acquire skills and knowledge that can be directly applied towards research.

Bao worked in a protein engineering study with two projects aiming to understand the structure-function relationship of a type of receptor called chimeric antigen receptor (CAR). Bao states, "This receptor is incorporated into T cells and CAR T cells that are then used to treat cancers. I was able to learn about protein engineer strategies such as directed evolution and site-detected mutagenesis. I also learned how to construct vectors for various uses such as yeast display, soluble protein production and cell surface expression. I also learned how to do tumor cell staining and flow cytometry."

  • #FacesofPlymouthState: Ashley Hichborn ‘20

"Hello, I am Ashley Hichborn, a senior here at PSU designing my own major called Graphic Design for Promotional Communications with a dual minor in Women Studies and Studio art! Being involved on campus is the mostimportant part of my college experience! I am currently the Student Body President of Student Government, the Chair of the Communications Committee, the president of Alpha Iota Sigma Honors Society, an orientation leader, the publicist for Sexual Assault and Violence Education Club, and I work with different political groups on and off campus. During the year I do graphic design and event planning for the Interdisciplinary Studies department. This summer I had the chance to work in the Communications and Marketing department at PSU, helping promote what a great university we have.
What has made my time here so impactful is the incredible faculty I have had the honor of working with during my fellowships, work study jobs, and conferences. This coming year, I am working with Plymouth's Title IX Coordinator and State Legislative, doing advocacy marketing. Plymouth not only provided me the education and opportunities to grow professionally and help me on my career path, but it has also built a community for me that I can always call home."

  • #FacesofPlymouthState: Jacob Shairs ‘20
"Hi! My name is Jacob Shairs. I am the Speaker of the Plymouth State Student Senate, as well as the Chairman of the New Hampshire Federation of College Republicans, a member of Sigma Pi Fraternity at Plymouth State, and the Secretary for the Class of 2020. I am a Political Science Major, with minors in Pre-Law and Business Administration. Without Plymouth State, I wouldn’t be in the position I am today. The people that I have met, and the job opportunities that have been offered to me through the Plymouth State network and events that we have held at the University are remarkable. During the 2018 election cycle, I worked for Steve Negron for Congress. I was elected to be the Chairman of the New Hampshire Federation of College Republicans in April because of the work that I have put in at Plymouth and the State of New Hampshire over the last three years. My fraternity, Sigma Pi at Plymouth State, has been a solid foundation for service opportunities. We have spent many hours giving back to our community by volunteering at events like Climb Above Addiction, Mental Health Awareness nights, and various food drives to help people in need. Without Plymouth State pushing me to be the best person I can be every day, these opportunities may not have found me."
