  • Highlights from Marcus Hunter's #MTW19 presentation "Chocolate Cities":
*Let’s take away all the vernacular: slums, ghetto, etc. and call them “chocolate cities.”
    *Stereotypes and pervasive images matter.
*What kind of work do we in black communities need to do to make sure that everyone is a citizen of the chocolate cities, including queer and transgender?
*Tale of two Ms. Johnsons: Marsha P. Johnson took the first blow at Stonewall, launching the gay rights movement, and Duanna Johnson who was brutally beaten by police in a hospital waiting room. Both transwomen died of alleged suicides. #MTW19

  • E. Patrick Johnson just wrapped. Some highlights:
*Johnson sang Luther Vandross while explaining concept of “a house is not a home” to delight of audience.
*Having been denied access to this dream of a “home”, black queer folk have reconfigured their discourse of “home” vs “house.”
*Harlem cabaret in North and other spaces like the “juke joint” provided places for queer black folk to push back against the middle class “uplift” narrative.
*House parties provided a space for black queers in conservative places to socialize safely without harassment. #MTW19 #BlackHistoryMonth

  • Dear Rutgers University – Newark community members,

We have learned from the City of Newark that a crew is doing emergency repair work to a water line on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard near Bleeker Street that supplies fire hydrants. As a result, Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard is closed between Central Avenue and Warren Street, which is expected to last for the next eight to ten hours. There is no disruption to residential or commercial water service at Rutgers-Newark expected during this work.

If the prognosis for the work on this water line changes in a way that would affect the RU-N community, we will share such information when we receive it.

We join the City of Newark in appreciation for your patience as this repair work is completed.

    Sincerely,
    Peter
