  • Dear Rutgers University – Newark community members,

I write to announce a transition in our leadership team and invite you to join me in offering most profound thanks to one of the wisest leaders and warmest colleagues with whom I’ve had the pleasure to serve, while welcoming into a new role a highly accomplished, engaged scholar, award-winning teacher, and visionary academic leader.

Our beloved friend and colleague, Jerome Williams, has decided to step down as Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor so he can return to the faculty of Rutgers Business School (RBS), where he holds the Prudential Chair in Business, enabling him to turn his full attention to his scholarship, teaching, advising, and national leadership roles in his field. As many of you know, Jerome is globally renowned in the field of marketing, especially for his publicly engaged scholarship addressing racial disparities and implicit bias—expertise that informed his high-impact work as Provost. From co-chairing the Chancellor’s Commission on Diversity and Transformation, to advocating vigorously for our faculty in the Rutgers-wide tenure and promotion processes, to leading efforts to broker cluster hires that have increased the diversity of our faculty, to pioneering the concept of socially-relevant flash courses taught over breaks, Jerome has played an outsized role in helping us achieve so much under our strategic plan. During Jerome’s tenure as Provost, we developed a very collaborative model, working closely as a threesome—Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer Sherri-Ann Butterfield, Jerome, and myself—with the deans of our schools and colleges to support their agendas. We will miss him in our leadership team when he steps down effective September 1, 2019, but we look forward to continuing to benefit from his wisdom and ongoing engagement in key anchor institution initiatives and publicly-engaged scholarship.

At the same time, we are thrilled to announce that Ashwani Monga will be our new Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor. Since joining us as Professor and Chair of the Marketing Department of RBS in 2014, Ashwani has quickly established himself as an innovative leader, modeling engagement at every level, from outstanding teaching and advising of undergraduate, graduate, and executive students; to strengthening the marketing department in its newly reconstituted form, including hiring a diverse new cohort of faculty and fostering research and academic program excellence while strategically expanding with the introduction of the new M.S. in Digital Marketing; to helping realize our vision of a more engaged and inclusive university by serving on the working group that founded the Honors Living-Learning Community and on the Rutgers-wide Committee on Sexual Harassment Prevention and Culture Change. Since 2017, he has been serving as Vice Dean for Academic Programs and Innovation at RBS, applying the work he did to build greater cohesion in the marketing department to the RBS-wide portfolio as he oversaw programs for the school’s approximately 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students in Newark and New Brunswick.

The respect and confidence that Ashwani has garnered in these roles is echoed by his disciplinary peers. Since doing his doctoral work at the University of Minnesota, he has focused on consumers' judgment and decision biases that are at the heart of both marketing and public policy. His particular focus is on the psychology/economics of time and money, for example, time-money differences and the effects of time on self-control. For the inaugural Marketing Science Institute (MSI) Scholar Awards of 2018, Ashwani was among 34 faculty members worldwide who were recognized by the MSI for excellence in marketing scholarship. He has also received the 2018 Young Alumni Achievers Award from his MBA alma mater, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. In addition, he has received outstanding reviewer awards from two top Marketing journals, on both of which he currently serves as an Associate Editor: Journal of Consumer Research and Journal of Consumer Psychology. A champion of doctoral education, he has not only taught seminars, chaired dissertation committees, and served as a doctoral program coordinator, but has also organized dissertation proposal competitions for the Society for Consumer Psychology.

Please join me in offering our deepest thanks and warmest wishes to Jerome as he returns to RBS and in offering enthusiastic support and a warm welcome to Ashwani as he takes on the pivotal role as Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor of Rutgers University – Newark, working in collaboration with me, Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer Sherri-Ann Butterfield and the deans of our schools and colleges to move the University forward.

    Cordially,

    Nancy Cantor
    Chancellor
