  • “A few years back, I decided that I could go no further in my career without a degree. As a vice president with a Fortune 500 homebuilding company, I could not apply for the job I had! I also realized that higher education was the only way to truly expand my skill set in business and that this degree would open doors for me that never existed. So, I threw myself into the classes, realizing that I was experiencing the best possible scenario for learning as my studies reflected day to day activities I was engaged in. I had a plethora of material to choose from as case studies for my work! My boss soon grew weary of my suggestions for change as I looked closely at procedures and practices. This was a great exercise for my company as it was for me. This was awesome because I was being reimbursed for some of my classes. During my online undergraduate experience, my family was very supportive, as I spent many nights shut in my office writing papers, blogs and essays. I am very fortunate to have had a supporting wife to encourage me along the way!” - Kevin Kernahan, BSBA ‘18

  • “As a respiratory care therapist and manager, one of the things that I've always wanted to do was to complete my bachelor's degree. It's more of a requirement now as we advance. I just felt that it made me more marketable, and it was something that I always wanted to do. Along the way, I've had some personal challenges. I lost my husband. It motivated me to get my degree. After a long challenging road, I am thankful through the support of God, my family and my recently departed husband to finally accomplish one of my goals. I look forward to continuing my education and extremely proud of making it this far.” - Loideth Huff, BS '18 (in purple)

  • “My father came to this country as a teenager. While a successful provider for the family, the cost of college for his children was simply out of reach. So, I formed my own college plan of military enlistment, an associates degree and veteran’s benefits for a bachelor’s degree. At 17, I signed an enlistment contract. Several months later, I left for Air Force basic training and a two-year assignment to Germany! Soon, I saw an opportunity to expedite my plan. The Air Force was downsizing so I requested an early discharge from active duty, went home to attend college full-time and graduated with an associates degree. During the next year, I was surprised to see my veteran’s benefits exhausted. The economic recession made engineering jobs scarce and I had to make a difficult decision. So, I delayed my college plan once again. The next several years brought marriage, three children and gradual career progression in the electronics field, enhancing my resume with industry certification and technical licensure. Then, I learned of the Electronics Systems Engineering Technology program at TESU. I soon enrolled, and the scholarship committee offered me a scholarship based upon my military career, work experience and GPA. In March 2018, I was awarded my long-awaited bachelor’s degree. While more than 30 years have passed since my first college class, the journey was worth it. Today, my resume includes several years of industry experience in electronics, foreign experience, professional credentials and an engineering degree!” - Peter Brenner III, BSAST ‘18

  • Imagine this: You wake up tomorrow morning without any electricity, so there's no water to make your coffee. Concerned, you pull out your phone, only to find that it didn't charge overnight and the battery is dead. You turn on your computer, but the Wi-Fi won't work. Now scared, you break out the portable radio and try to find out what is going on – but there is nothing broadcasting. The radio is silent.

  • “So I started at Monmouth University in 2005 right after I graduated from high school. I studied until 2009 but it was it on and off. I had a lot of mental health issues that held me back – wild hospitalizations, I was very sick – but I still managed to gain 108 credits so I applied to Thomas Edison and they accepted 107 credits! It helped me to live my dream, to get me to where I am today. To feel confident, to feel like I accomplished something. If you have those credits that you worked so hard for and you put that time in and to finish those credits, then nothing should stop you!” - Tara Gutkin, BA '18

  • "Martin Luther King, Jr., was a crusader and a voice for equality and social justice during a time when being that voice was perilous. He had plenty of reasons to stand down. His eventual triumph in changing the tide of civil rights was met at every juncture with rancor, violence, threats and even imprisonment.

Dr. King knew that the promise of a better life for those he represented was worth the effort. And through his fight for equality he lifted our whole nation.

At TESU, we are especially proud of our students who are committed to changing their lives and their communities for a better society.

On Monday, January 21, as we remember Dr. King and the enormity of his impact, we celebrate his legacy by engendering a strong, engaged and inclusive environment in our work, education and civic life." - President Merodie A. Hancock

The most important thing about earning my degree was increasing my self-confidence and having the recognition that I do have my BSN now. With the support of my family, friends and co-workers it has been a long haul. Receiving the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award in the RN to BSN program made it all worthwhile.” - Nancy Distelkamp, BSN ‘18
