  • The Associate of Arts (AA) degree in Liberal Studies program eliminates textbook costs and allows students to complete their degrees using OER alternatives. And now, students in any of the University’s bachelor’s degree programs can utilize the same OER options to complete their general education requirements, too, using courses that have no textbook or learning materials costs.

  • "A few years into college, I decided I wanted to join the Air Force to serve, travel and fund my college education. Working with officers in the field as a combat weather forecaster, I was advised to transfer with the college-level credits I earned from my training. As an active duty member at the time, I was able to attend classes online from Arizona, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Mississippi, New Mexico, Washington and Guam while my husband was serving in South Korea and I was relocating with our children. There are challenges inherent to military life that hinder our career aspirations when we move so often, and our children need quality time and attention as they face the dynamic lifestyle. TESU provided the optimal platform for me to obtain my graduate degree amidst that constant transition of military life. With the wonderful support of my family and professors, my journey to obtain my Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degree in 2017 was truly a way for me to reinvent myself. From military veteran, to military spouse, to educator and now military family advocate, my advice to military members and spouses is to continue to persist in your endeavors - the process is the most challenging, but when you reach the end, that feeling is ever so sweet." - Simalua A. • “I went to college initially when I was 19 years old, and I didn't take it very seriously. I was in the military at the time, and I was exploring the world and it was not a priority. I took a semester at a community college but did not pursue it any further; this has been my life’s biggest regret. As I've gotten older, there was sort of a hole in me that was not filled because there was always a void. Not having finished my degree was something that always stuck with me throughout my life. More recently, as my prospective retirement date from the Department of Justice grew closer and with such a young family – a married father with two sons, currently ages fifteen and four – I realized that I desired a whole new career post-retirement (expected in 2022). Further, I wanted to set an example for my sons by finishing college and going to graduate school; something I fully expect from both of them. When my youngest was born about four years ago, I thought, well look, I'll be insisting that he goes to college. I need to do this myself first to set an example, and to fill that void that I had for many many many years. I mean, I'm 52 now, so it's been a very long journey. As I've gotten older, I've gotten more in sync with veterans needs and veterans’ rights, and it became my goal to become a social worker to work with veterans with PTSD and that would not be possible without a bachelor’s degree in psychology. My life’s biggest regret has been rectified, and I completed my BA in psychology with a 3.977 GPA.” – Frank L. Parker, BA ‘18

  • “I was working between two states (New York/New Jersey), and I worked two per diem jobs as an associate degree nurse bedside while going to school. It's why I went back and got my bachelor's. I just thought it was really important. I was very fortunate to be able to go to school online and having the flexibility contributed to my success in completing my BSN. I thought that it was important for my nieces and nephews to have a role model who was working and going to school. My husband and family were very supportive. I currently work as a staff registered nurse in a neurosurgical/trauma intensive care unit. I love being active with the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. The organization promotes nursing excellence in critical care. Now that I completed my BSN, I look forward to continuing my education. I am excited for the future.” - Ursula Gowran, BSN '17

  • “This is all I’ve known; I came into the military when I was 18 years old, and I’ve been in the military for 18 years. So, going into the civilian workforce is a little scary, but exciting. I intend to use my MSM when I retire in two years to assist people in Trenton, New Jersey where I was born and raised. Throughout my entire career, my family had continued to encourage me to pursue my dreams and to be there when I needed them to help with my kids. I have been blessed with a great support system. No matter what you plan for, you’re always gonna be busy. You have to make a commitment to yourself, you have to make a commitment to what your goals are and I would say, take that first step. Once the ball gets rolling, then it makes it so much easier. And then once you get that momentum going, don’t stop.” – Ana Gatson, MSM ‘18
