Thanks to all who turned out and support our mission. Remember the warning signs of stroke: F-A-S-T. F for Face droop on one side; A for Arm that drifts downward; S for Speech that sounds slurred; T for Time to call 911 now.

  • The 200 therapists who work at Upstate University Hospital often receive great feedback from patients: “You pushed me.” “You are compassionate and caring.” “You knew I could do it.” Their skills and dedication to “bringing patients back to their maximum function” is the core of Upstate’s Rehabilitation therapy section of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation department.

The department oversees many areas: physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language pathology, recreational therapy and vocational therapy, as well as physiatry and psychology. Therapists from these departments help patients recover from surgery, injuries or illness. Their scope is broad – from teaching someone how to walk again to balancing a checkbook after a brain injury or returning to play after an injury.

“We’re here to rehabilitate people in order to fully function in the community,” said Lori Holmes, PT, DPT, director of rehabilitation therapy. #NationalHospitalWeek

  • The Upstate University Hospital Environmental Services staff is trained on many things – CDC guidelines, regulatory requirements, infection control, environmental health and safety, and more.

The EVS team trains its folks to be cognizant of more than just what needs to be cleaned. EVS staff frequently enter patient rooms – an intimate setting where emotions can run high.

“We are interacting with patients and families who might be under a tremendous amount of stress,” said EVS Director Susan V. Murphy, MBA, CCHESP. So in addition to a formula for cleaning – top to bottom, dry to wet, left to right, clean and disinfect – the EVS team trains to be professional, kind and empathetic.

Environmental Services is comprised of more than 300 people who spend all day on their feet, cleaning nearly three million square feet of space across 31 Upstate buildings.

“We care about our people and they know that what they do matters.” #NationalHospitalWeek
