  • Special thanks to Greg Loh from City of Syracuse - Office of the Mayor who presented Upstate with a proclamation declaring April 17 Donate Life Day in Syracuse, highlighting the need for organ donors. There are currently 9,500 New York state residents in need of an organ donation. One donor can save up to 8 lives, and help 75 more through tissue and cornea donations. Talk with your loved ones about your wishes, and visit Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network or www.donorrecovery.org to join the state registry.

  • CELEBRATING OUR CHAPLAIN INTERNS
It’s graduation season and Upstate has just celebrated the graduation of our Clinical Pastoral Education Chaplain Interns. With Upstate Spiritual Care Manager and CPE Supervisor the Rev. Terry Culbertson, seated center right, they are, from left, Se Gey Shin, Linda Mulrooney, Dare Dutter, Katelynn Ruffo and Paschal Anionye. As chaplain interns, these individuals were part of an interdisciplinary care team serving hospitalized patients and their loved ones. This direct service facilitates the application of learned theory and your own personal and pastoral experiences as you minister to patients, families and staff. Congrats and thank you for your service.

  • What a wonderful week it has been recognizing several volunteers for National Health Care Volunteer Week, April 7 to 13. Upstate volunteers are critical to the functions of the hospital. To our volunteers – all 354 of them – we thank you for your outstanding service, dedication and care. We couldn’t do it without you!

    Lisa Pesce, of Liverpool

Service: 70 hours since October 2018

Where she volunteers: Various spots at the downtown campus

Lisa Pesce is a reiki master and an assistant chaplain for the Department of Spiritual Care. A practitioner of reiki, which she describes as a type of spiritual massage, Lisa has been supporting Upstate patients, families and staff since the fall.

She is referred to specific patients a variety of ways, including by doctors making their rounds to check on conditions. Lisa said she used to be nervous about being in a hospital but her time at Upstate has changed her whole thinking.

“I float out of there, I don’t know how else to explain it,” she said. “It’s some sort of fulfillment – it fills me up.” Lisa said her volunteer work is a perfect combination of what she loves in life. “I love reiki. I love talking. I love meeting new people and hearing their stories. I like to help and support people and it’s God, which I love. Everything came together in this beautiful little woven tapestry. It’s very nice.”

Paul Angerame and his dog, Bella, of Clay

Service: 24 hours over one year

Where they volunteer: With chemotherapy patients at the downtown campus.

When Paul Angerame pulls out the yellow vest his dog Bella wears when she visits Upstate University Hospital, Paul said the 83-pound Bernese Mountain Dog gets very excited. Bella, who is 9, has arthritis, which keeps her visits to Upstate short – about 30 minutes. But as a certified therapy dog, Bella loves visiting patients and patients love her.

“She goes right up to them and they light up when they see her,” Paul said. Paul and Bella also volunteer at the Joslin Diabetes Center and at a local senior living facility. At Upstate, the pair is usually visiting patients undergoing chemotherapy and Paul said he can tell that Bella gives them something positive and loving to focus on instead; it’s why he loves volunteering their time.

“You see a big, friendly, fluffy looking dog smiling right at you – she just looks like a dog you’d want to pet.”

    Helen Fischer, of North Syracuse

Service: 15,335 hours over 25 years

Where she volunteers: Various spots at the Community Campus

Helen Fischer is an extremely committed volunteer who is clearly great at driving in the snow! She commutes to the Upstate Community Campus from her home in North Syracuse in all kinds of weather to report for her 6:45 a.m. shift at the Surgery Center.

She also volunteers at the East Lobby patient registration desk as a greeter and dispatcher. “I rarely miss a shift,” she said. “Volunteering gives me a purpose for which I am grateful.”

Helen’s hours at Upstate add up to 91 straight weeks of volunteer time!

Candee Derragon, Kerry Moore and Maggie Meier

Service: Kerry has logged nearly 2,000 hours working four days a week for the last two and a half years; Maggie has logged 60 hours and Candee has logged nearly 70 hours since she and Maggie started in October 2018.

    Where they volunteer: Downtown Express

Candee Derragon, Kerry Moore and Maggie Meier are part of Upstate’s Downtown Express, which is a hub of volunteers on-call during their shift to do a variety of tasks. Downtown Express volunteers can escort visitors, bring specimens to the lab, deliver flowers and answer phones. In 2018, Express volunteers handled 27,000 calls. Of those, they discharged 5,100 patients, made 9,728 lab runs, and escorted 5,871 visitors and patients to their locations within the hospital, among many other helpful duties.

“They are critical in the movement of the hospital,” said Mary Bodner, volunteer manager for the Office of Volunteer Programs. “These volunteers are looking to give their time and they have chosen our hospital to do so. They are just the most dedicated people.”

Anthony Pugliese, junior at Syracuse University

Service: 190 hours over two years

Where he volunteers: Downtown Express and the post-anesthesia care unit at the Community Campus

Anthony Pugliese is a junior at Syracuse University, majoring in health and exercise science. His interest in volunteering at Upstate was twofold: first, he hoped to complement his classwork by exploring the clinical side of medicine; second, his Jesuit high school in New York City fostered a desire to serve others. Anthony’s advice to other students: “Volunteering among doctors and the medical team can be intimidating at first but totally worth it. Expose yourself to as much as you can – that is how you grow!”

  • Upstate Medical University honors and celebrates the contributions of women today, on International Women's Day, and every day. We recently announced the creation of a new scholarship, named for one of our famous female graduates, Dr. Sarah Loguen Fraser- the first African-American woman to graduate here, and just the fourth African-American woman physician in the country.

The Dr. Sarah Loguen Fraser Dean's Student Distinction Award is an annual full-tuition scholarship, plus housing at Upstate's on campus residence and a stipend to be given to an African-American female medical student who best epitomizes the spirit and determination of Dr. Loguen Fraser. Jada McMahon, who will enter the Upstate Medical University College of Medicine as a first year student this fall, has been named as the first recipient of the award.
