  • Kathy Kramer, a professor in SUNY Cortland’s Art and Art History Department, is looking back fondly 50 years after Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon. Armstrong, in fact, had inspired her years before that. Kramer’s father, Kenneth C. Kramer, a retired professor of psychology at Trinity University in San Antonio, had flown with Armstrong in the U.S. Navy as fighter pilots in the Korean War. Years later, Armstrong visited the Kramers in San Antonio and signed an autograph for Kenneth Kramer’s young daughter. “To Kathy – I wish I had your future.”

“This was so typical of Neil’s humility and generosity,” Kathy Kramer said. Armstrong and Kenneth Kramer continued to meet at Fighter Squadron 51 reunions for many years, including this 2010 photo. And Kathy Kramer has held onto her memories of Armstrong as not just a hero for science and exploration but as a family friend.

  • Tomorrow is June 21, the summer solstice and the longest period of daylight we’ll see in 2019.

Let’s not let all that natural light go to waste.

This year, SUNY Cortland is again among the SUNY campuses participating in the #Daylighthour global initiative, a campaign that encourages offices throughout the world to turn off their lights for one hour or longer.

On behalf of that effort, we are asking all SUNY Cortland staff and faculty to flip their wall switch at noon on Friday, June 21, and not turn it on again until 1 p.m. or later.
