  • We still have one week until classes begin, but our Summer Experience Programs have already started. This morning, students participating in the Genesee Valley Sustainability Experience kayaked their way through Conesus Lake Inlet to gain a better understanding of this region's natural resources. Our summer experience programs can take you to the Adirondacks, Letchworth State Park, or right in our back yard in the Genesee Valley. Interested in learning more? • Before Christina Morrow '20 started classes at #Geneseo, she spent three days in Letchworth State Park with other incoming students. They learned about local indigenous history and the park’s flora, fauna and biodiversity. They camped, hiked, rafted in the gorge, wrote in their journals and pulled invasive plants. Geneseo offers three such "First-Year Experiences" during the summer — in the Adirondacks, Letchworth and the Genesee Valley.

  • Geneseo alum Greg O’Connell '64 has been passionate about improving communities since his days as a New York City police officer and detective, work that he says honed his skills for listening to many different people, giving him insight into their needs and shaping his vision for building neighborhoods.

Now O’Connell is focusing on ways he can invest in communities' underserved youth by providing scholarships for them to pursue their goals at SUNY #Geneseo.

  • Last week, President Denise Battles had a chance to visit with students enrolled in SUNY #Geneseo’s summer learning program for rural youth, "Soaring Stars."

Since 2008, Soaring Stars has provided an enrichment experience to increase on-time graduation rates in rural schools by reducing summer learning loss and providing opportunities that support the development of social-emotional skills and academic skills.

Students come from 6 surrounding districts in Livingston and Steuben counties, beginning the program the summer after kindergarten and are invited back through their rising 5th grade year.

Soaring stars has demonstrated an elimination in summer learning loss for more than 95% of the children that attend 20/25 days of program. Increases in academic skills, as measured by the home districts of the students, are demonstrated in 38% of the students that attend more than 3 years.

Teachers, many of whom started in the program as Geneseo undergraduate students, have returned year after year.

We're extremely proud to host this program and watch its positive effects on our local youth and community. 🙂🎓

"Everyone has a particular lens on how they look at the world," said Prince. "Hopefully, it will go beyond just us making these elements on the wall and move into drawing a deeper sensitivity for each other and also spur us all into action."

  • Last month, #neuroscience and #psychology students from Geneseo participated in CSF Flow, a conference gathering experts from around the world who specialize in Chiari (a malformation of the base of the skull) and Syringomyelia (fluid accumulation in the spinal cord).

The organization sponsoring the conference, Column of Hope, was founded by Geneseo alum Mark Kane '80. Mark and his family (Geneseo grads Barbara Bangerter Kane ’80, Laura Kane-Punyon '06, Joseph Kane '09) have made significant efforts to advance research for these disorders. The students who participated in CSF Flow along with #Geneseo professor of psychology Terence Bazzett found the content and experience hugely valuable. Well done, all.

Neuroscience is one of Geneseo's newest, most progressive, and most rigorous programs. It is offered with cooperation from the departments of biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics and psychology. geneseo.edu/neuroscience

  • This week 50 years ago, Apollo 11 rocketed through space carrying the first humans who would ever touch the surface of the #Moon. An astonishing achievement by any measure, it would be repeated five more times by NASA during the Apollo Program.

One thing you may not know is that three of those missions included a science team from SUNY #Geneseo. Geology professor Richard Young led the Geneseo team in photogeologic analysis of the Moon for the Apollo 15, 16, and 17 missions using orbital photography returned directly by the #Apollo astronauts and results from other experiments.

Young's team was comprised of Geneseo #geology professors William Brennan, Douglas Nichols, himself, and several undergraduate students who assisted with crater and landform analyses. At the time, it was the largest science grant ever received by SUNY Geneseo.
