  • As QC President Felix V. Matos Rodriguez accepts the role of CUNY Chancellor, he reflects on his time at Queens College and on all the good we have accomplished together:

As you are probably aware, the CUNY Board of Trustees has entrusted upon me the responsibility and honor of serving as CUNY's eighth chancellor starting May 1, 2019. I am deeply grateful and tremendously excited to lead the nation's foremost urban public university, particularly at this time when our mission and commitment to excellent public higher education has never been more vital. This is an extraordinary opportunity for anyone who is passionate about the role CUNY plays in the lifeblood of this city--anyone who is deeply committed to opening the doors of educational excellence and economic and social mobility to all the people of New York.

I am proud to come from the faculty ranks of the university I am about to lead. I've had the privilege of serving CUNY in three boroughs over nearly two decades. From my early years as an associate professor of Black and Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College, to the decade I have served as President of Hostos Community College and Queens College, this university has been a source of immeasurable professional growth, personal joy, and my home.

It is not easy for me to share this news with the QC community who has so generously embraced me and my family during the past five years. I thank each and every one of you for your friendship and collegiality. I'm proud of the collective work we have been able to accomplish despite tight fiscal times. Our success has been propelled by a unique kinship of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners who together carry on QC's legacy of academic excellence, service, and access. I thank CUNY Board Chair, Bill Thompson, for granting my request to allow me to preside at our May 30 Commencement as president.

We will share news about the leadership transition in the college in the weeks ahead after appropriate consultation and reflection. I know I will miss you and our beautiful campus, but I'm comforted by the thought that we will be working together still as I transition to my new role as chancellor of this great university.

I look forward to continue working with you to build a stronger QC and a stronger CUNY for decades to come. Thank you, in advance, for your support.

    Saludos,
    Felo

  • “I just loved the warmth of the college and people here," says Shristee Poudel '21 who studied for a semester at Northern Arizona University and earned her Associates from LaGuardia Community College before settling at Queens College as a Transfer Honors Program student this spring. She was accepted into the program on a full scholarship.

For as long as she could remember, Shristee always had a love for numbers. When her older sister left their home in Nepal to study in Bangladesh, her courage inspired Shristee to want to leave her country and study abroad as well. She wanted to make her family as proud of her as they were of her big sister.

As a data science major, Shristee's hope is to one day earn a PhD and become a data analyst and researcher. “There are so many inspiring women in STEM. I would like to follow them and do research in mathematics," she adds.

  • While playing a video game years ago, Paul Prageeth '21 noticed a glitch in the game’s code that allowed him to manipulate in-game events. "I wanted to understand how that glitch happened and see what else I could hack. I didn't believe that only the game's creators could have control over it," he says about what fueled his interest in coding.

With the support and encouragement of his family already in the U.S., he and his twin brother moved to Jamaica, Queens from Sri Lanka to continue their college education. He enrolled in LaGuardia Community College where he excelled in all his classes, was selected as an America Needs You Fellow, and earned a Distinguished Member Award from Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. He graduated magna cum laude from LAGCC this past fall.

As an incoming Transfer Honors Program student this spring, Paul will be pursuing his BS and eventually a graduate degree in computer science at Queens College. "I want to work at Google focused on artificial intelligence," he says with enthusiasm, "That's the dream."

  • Four years ago, Zhenyi Wang ’21 packed her bags and moved to the U.S. on her own. She had earned a degree in International Trade from Qingdao University in her native China, but it wasn't a career she felt compelled to pursue. "I love numbers," says the straight-A Applied Math major/Data Science minor, "I want my future job to be related to math, but in China, it's uncommon for someone to return to school after a certain age."

Zhenyi enrolled at Queensborough Community College / CUNY where she shared her passion for mathematics as a tutor in the Math Center and CUNY Research Scholar studying "The Uniqueness of the Portfolio that Pays the Maximum Dividend Rate." She completed her Associate of Science at QCC in 2018.

This Spring term, Zhenyi will join hundreds of transfer students entering Queens College to earn their Bachelor's degree. She was accepted to QC's Transfer Honors Program and looks forward to continuing her tutoring and research.
