  • Faculty Highlight: Professor Cecilia McHugh travels the world studying ancient sediment and mapping sea floors to learn more about past earthquakes and, possibly, anticipate future natural disasters. What she learns through her research is important because it can help governments around the world understand and prepare for future risks. Professor McHugh’s discovery of unmapped faults in Haiti in 2010 was cited by the Obama White House, and last fall, she was elected a fellow of the Geological Society of America.

“I’m not just doing this because it’s interesting. I’m doing this because it has a purpose. It has so much meaning, knowing you can make a difference. You can save lives.”

In the photo, Professor McHugh stands before sediment cores in QC's School of Earth and Environmental Sciences. They contain clues as to when and where great earthquakes and tsunamis occurred—and when they might happen again.

  • Get your swim gear ready! QC cut the ribbon on FitzGerald Gymnasium’s new swimming pool, locker rooms, and shower rooms. The most comprehensive renovation of these facilities since they first opened in 1958 was made possible thanks to a donation from alumna and former leader of the QC women’s swim team, Dina Axelrad Perry.

“The renovations have and will dramatically impact all of our programs,” says Interim Athletics Director Rob Twible. “The improvements have been way overdue and will positively impact our athletic, recreational, educational, and community programs.”

  • Dr. Margaret Kiely, often referred to as the “First Lady” of Queens College, was the school’s first dean of students and worked alongside President Paul Klapper in the early days of the college. She helped pave the way for women in higher education administration, developing programs for faculty assistance, and counseling and placement for students. She was looked upon fondly, as noted in our 1942 yearbook, “She likes the students, knows many of them personally, interests herself in their out of school, as well as in school problems.” Now you know the names behind the buildings! #WomensHistoryMonth

  • Political science major Carlos Chediek was inspired to take action by President Barack Obama’s last State of the Union address. “I got truly inspired to be an agent of change in my community, “ he says. “I felt energized, ready to make a difference.” Joining NYPIRG’s voter registration drive, he signed up more than 1,700 students in 2016. That led to his current role as Queens College ambassador for the The Andrew Goodman Foundation and its nonpartisan Vote Everywhere project. Ambassadorial responsibilities have taken Chediek to various areas, from classrooms to making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the homeless with the organization Midnight Run. After graduation, Carlos wants to work as a paralegal in order to take the first steps in becoming a lawyer.

  • Just Announced: QC alumnus Matt Higgins of ABC's Shark Tank will address the Class of 2019 as the commencement speaker.

Higgins’ lifelong connection to the college was fostered by his mother, a single working parent in whose memory he established the Linda Higgins Empowerment Scholarship, which supports single mothers who are taking classes at the college.

“The foundation of my entire career was poured at Queens College, so it is incredibly meaningful for me to come full circle and celebrate the 2019 graduating class as commencement speaker,” Higgins said. “It is a place where the promise of an excellent education is not contingent on means, but on mettle.”
