  • "I've been a Durham Police Officer for over 12 years, and currently serve in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves. In addition to working and military service, my wife and I have three children, and operate two small businesses. Two of my coworkers recently graduated from NCCU and encouraged me to apply. I chose NCCU because I grew up on and around the campus. My mother attended NCCU part-time for many years, while working full-time. I would sit in the back of her classrooms, or wait for her in the Library Bowl. She finished her degree in 2003, and went to obtain master and doctorate degrees. Graduating from NCCU, the hometown school, and paying homage to my mother's commitment to academics will be a very proud day for me."

  • "NCCU has been my dream school for years and I'm excited to get the opportunity to experience the culture and environment of an HBCU. Choosing my major was easy when I learned about NCCU's great Social Work program. I plan on going to law school after completing the program.

In 11th grade, I took a criminal law and justice class that was always so intriguing to me. I learned so much more than I thought I could and I loved it. My eyes were opened when I learned about wrongfully-convicted people. It hurts me to see this because it's so unfair that their lives get taken away because of this. I would love to free innocent people from prison so that they can get their lives back."

"My journey to NCCU was one to remember, from the moment I took my campus tour. I fell in love with the people, atmosphere and community. I felt like I was at home, surrounded by family. The outpouring of love from everyone was overwhelming and made me want to be a part of this wonderful HBCU even more than before. NCCU was the only school that I knew in my heart was for me and would help me impact the world. I wear my Eagle with pride every day because I know I've joined a strong legacy of change agents in this new chapter of my life."

  • Chancellor Johnson O. Akinleye shared the message below with the NCCU community regarding the passing of Board of Trustee Member and Alumnus Isaiah Tidwell, C’67.

    August 5, 2019

    Dear NCCU Community,

It is with profound sadness that I share with you that our beloved NCCU Board of Trustee Member and Alumnus Isaiah Tidwell, C’67, passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2019. His passing is indeed a great loss for his family, the NCCU community and members of the Eagle alumni family.

Trustee Tidwell was more than an accomplished business executive, esteemed trustee and dedicated alumnus of North Carolina Central University; he was a friend and a person who loved and represented this institution with pride and distinction. He was selected by his class to serve as the Founder’s Day speaker for the Golden Eagles in 2017.

I would ask that you place his loving wife and college sweetheart, Alumna Hellena Huntley Tidwell, C’68, and their family and classmates in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Funeral arrangements will be shared once they are complete.

    In Truth and Service,

    Johnson O. Akinleye, Ph.D.
    Chancellor
