  • Appropriately located in the heart of campus, the Fisher Memorial Garden recognizes the Seahawks who have left us too soon. Earlier this week, we were honored to dedicate a few pieces of campus to those we lost recently. They may be gone, but they will never be forgotten by their Seahawk family.

  • The tornado watch and severe thunderstorm warning have been lifted for New Hanover County and the vicinity. There could be residual wind and rain for the rest of the evening, so stay alert, Seahawks. Thank you for your attention today (and for hanging in there with us through all of our updates!).

  • The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for New Hanover County and several counties in our region. The squall is moving quickly and expected to arrive within the next 30 minutes, give or take. There is still not a tornado warning, but the tornado watch remains in effect (common during thunderstorm conditions). If the tornado watch becomes a tornado warning, registered students and employees will receive a cell phone call and text alert, and an email, and campus sirens will sound. For non-urgent updates, social media remains your best communication channel. Stay safe, Seahawks. Visit this page for thunderstorm safety tips:

  • As predicted, weather conditions have led to a tornado watch for New Hanover County and several surrounding counties. If this watch becomes a warning, students and employees will receive an emergency text alert and phone call via their registered cell phones - so Seahawks, please keep your phones powered on, charged, and within earshot while these weather conditions persist! Be smart and be safe, everyone.

  • This isn't a technical term or anything, but this weather is WEIRD. While we continue to wait for the rain to blow in, we wanted to remind you of the information channels available to you - check out this webpage for a refresher on the various ways we may try to reach you in an emergency. Oh, and if you're reading this message from the beach, KEEP THOSE WINGS DRY - stay out of the water while the rip current warnings remain in effect!

  • Seahawks, please be mindful of local weather warnings for the next 24-36 hours. We're expecting heavy rain that could lead to localized flooding and major wind gusts. You know the drill: Anytime there's the possibility of a weather event, we want you to be aware not to incite panic but so you can keep your phones on, charged, and handy for further information as applicable. In the limited chance that a tornado warning is issued (there isn't a watch in place, but sometimes those pop up with big storms), you will hear campus sirens, and you'll receive a call and alert on your registered cell phone, as well as an email via your campus inbox. If you take one thing away from this post in terms of this weekend, please let it be this: Stay the HAWK out of the water! There is a significant risk of life-threatening rip currents. Be smart, stay safe, and remain aware, everyone!

Friday Lifetime Achievement Award on Friday. The award, presented by the University of North Carolina Association of Student Governments, is given to individuals who have exhibited exemplary service to students of a UNC System institution. That is an understatement! Please join us in congratulating Vice Chancellor Leonard.

  • WEATHER ALERT: The following was just sent to all UNCW faculty, staff and students via email and is being shared on all social media platforms. If our tornado watch escalates to a warning, all registered cell phone numbers will receive a text alert (see below for more information).

    Campus Community:

There is a tornado WATCH in effect for New Hanover County and the surrounding region until 2 a.m. EDT. A "watch," as opposed to a "warning," indicates severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area. It does not mean that tornadoes will occur - only that they are possible. We are making you aware of this possibility now to provide ample time for preparation, should the watch escalate to a warning. Please ensure that your cell phones are charged and powered on, with the volume activated, so you will receive any tornado watch alerts issued by the National Weather Service and/or campus. If this watch escalates to a warning, the university will send a text alert via your registered cell phone number. (If you are a student, your cell number on file is already registered, unless you have opted out. If you are a faculty or staff member and you have not registered a cell phone number for emergency alerts, please visit the link below to do so.) This message will also be shared via the university’s social media channels. Thank you for your attention.
