  • “Evidence for our commitment to innovation can be found in the addition of two new academic degrees. The Bachelor of Applied Science degree offers pathways for students transitioning to a bachelor’s degree tailored to their needs in management, retail or entrepreneurial studies, while the Associate Arts degree (pending Higher Learning Commission approval) offers students an option if life circumstances necessitate leaving a bachelor’s program; the AA degree also helps support the workforce needs of the community.”

  • “I think it is critical to be a role model for someone else. If you can be a support system and teach another person a skill you have, you will be effectively upskilling and uplifting. You will help this individual gain technical skills; you will help them grow more confident in doing so. At Target, I believe we need to be constantly working on attracting diverse talent to STEM careers and retaining the diverse talent we already have. I invest there.”

  • “When I interviewed for the VCSU presidency, one of the most consistent and overriding comments I heard from campus and community constituents centered on the strength of the relationship between the university and the Valley City/Barnes County community, and the importance of sustaining and enhancing this relationship. I have found this to be very true, and I am thankful for it.”

  • Incoming VCSU first-year student Kirsten Ranke of Waterford, Wis., was recently recognized as one of her hometown’s outstanding seniors.

Ranke, who received VCSU’s top academic award, the McCready Scholarship, plans to major in English education with a minor in teaching English to Language Learners in Valley City. After graduation, she hopes to pursue a master’s degree and join Teachers Without Borders.

We can’t wait to welcome Kirsten and other outstanding students who will be walking the halls of VCSU this fall!

  • Meet Kourtney.

Hometown: Hazen, N.D. (graduated from Beulah)
    Year at VCSU: Junior
Studying: Mathematics education with an athletic coaching certificate
Campus Activities: New Student Orientation leader, Special Olympics College, Viking Ambassador, intramural sports
Dream job: High school math teacher in a rural North Dakota school and pursue a coaching or officiating career in volleyball at the high school level
Summer job: Coal Country Community Health Center, Beulah, N.D and helping her dad on their family ranch... they raise buffalo, by the way! She also works in the Business Office at VCSU during the school year and for the North Dakota High School Activities Association in Valley City.
Relatable character: Haley James Scott from “One Tree Hill” - Like me, she's kind of nerdy and awkward on occasion, family/friend orientated, and a high school teacher!
Favorite memory: Too many to choose just one! It ranges from meeting all my new friends to sledding down Snoey hill during a blizzard to dances my freshman year!

  • “I was proud to report — and brag a bit — to the House and Senate appropriations committees that more than 1,400 teachers and school administrators in North Dakota are graduates of VCSU! It’s paramount for us to not lose sight of our traditional purpose and mission while pursuing growth and change. Staying on the leading edge of innovative programs will position us well as we enter our next chapter as a university.”

  • The Great Plains STEM Education Center at Valley City State University recently hosted 33 North Dakota students from New Town and Trenton in its Middle School STEM Academy.

Aside from the academic topics covered on campus, the students participated in field trips to VCSU’s Prairie Waters Education and Research Center in Kathryn, the Red River Valley Zoo, North Dakota State University, Doosan Bobcat and Microsoft in Fargo, along with the Sheyenne Valley Area Career and Technology Center in Valley City and the Dakota College at Bottineau nursing program suite on the VCSU campus.

  • Meet Jonathan Stenslie '97.

    Tell us about yourself.
A: I grew up in Kensal, N.D., and received my bachelor's in Business Administration at VCSU. I now live in Fargo, N.D. and I am a lead server administrator in Technology Solutions (IT) at Sanford Health.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?
A: Interacting with the people I get to work with, knowing that the work we get to do helps the nurses, doctors, and staff make the patient experience better. I also love to learn about and work with new technologies.

Q: How did your time at VCSU prepare you for your current role and for life in general?
A: Being exposed to new ideas and experiences helped me expand my knowledge of and expectations for the world around me. I had opportunities to travel a bit and interact with others from different colleges, too. People at VCSU cared about me and wanted to know how I was doing and help me prepare for life after college.

Q: Is there anything you know now, that you wish you knew back then?
A: Stay on campus some weekends; don't just head back "home-home." Let VCSU become "home" to you. Keep in touch with the friends you make, they will be with you for a lifetime.

Q: Was there a particular faculty or staff member who impacted your experience?
A: Everyone was always nice, and helpful. Larry Robinson, Glen Schmalz, Ellen Chaffee, Bill Buck, Val Moritz, and Connie Stavens are just a quick few who come to mind. It would be a long list to name all the people over my time spent at VCSU. Diane Wood's business classes, Christine Lal's economics classes, Kuipers, Bruhschwein, "Archie" Moore's bird classes.

Q: What is your favorite memory at VCSU?
A: A few of my favorite memories were the student government (COSGA) trips I was able to be involved in, spending a summer wiring the campus network, and working many hours “imaging” the brand new laptops to be ready for the start of the semester. Ah, good times. 😀

  • Meet Benjamin.

    Hometown: Edgeley, N.D.
Year at VCSU: Junior (third year)
Studying: Double majoring in health science and software engineering
Campus Activities: Student Senate, E-Sports Club (vice president), VCSU Pre-Professional Club (vice president)
Dream job: Find a nice job and after a few years, travel the world!
Accomplishments at VCSU: I am a VCSU SOAR (Student Opportunities for Academic Research) grant recipient, and I founded the VCSU E-Sports Club.
Goals to reach by graduation: I want to feel like I made a difference for the future of VCSU!
Fun fact: I came to VCSU with a GED rather than a high school diploma.
