  • "My favorite part of my job is the students. I worked for the City of Akron [Police Department] for 13 years before this job. The job experiences were a bit different there - for the most part, here at UA, the interactions are positive. UA students are good kids and they are going places. There are a number of times I've met a student as a freshman, worked with them for about 4 years, watch them graduate, and then run into them somewhere 5 or 10 years down the road. They are successful professionals now but they still remember our interactions. It's really cool."

They all have an open-door policy, and they want undergraduates to come in and learn the ropes. They really want you to succeed.”

  • Happy 199th birthday to the founder of our beloved university, John R. Buchtel.

Buchtel started out his life working on his parents' farm in Stark County, Ohio. Despite his lack of education he was determined to be successful. He became a prosperous businessman, owning several farms, as well as working in the agricultural manufacturing business.
Even with all of Buchtel's success, he always remembered to give back to his community. To support the education of younger generations, he founded Buchtel College in 1867, which then became The University of Akron in 1913.

Even if you've had the worst call or a terrible day, you get to ride around with your best friend. She'll come through the center divider and lay her head on my shoulder. Sometimes people on campus don't know who I am, but they all know Halo. She's like an ambassador for the police department."

  • “I initially went to a different art school, and I actually didn’t quite like it there. It just didn’t fit me. I felt restricted in this environment that only focused on art. I actually came here to get my general education classes done and then go back, but that started to change because the thought of going back to that environment scared me a bit. I ended up falling in love with metalsmithing and the teachers are actually really nice here. They give me time to do things at my own pace.” -Emily Matusz, Majoring in Sculpture, Class of 2020
