  • Today on Presidents Day, we're sharing some facts about Miami alumnus, Benjamin Harrison, class of 1852, the 23rd president of the United States.
    ---

    Benjamin Harrison Facts:

23rd president of the United States, 1889-1893.

Graduated from Miami in 1852; his name was misspelled as Harris on Miami’s commencement program.

Only grandson of a president to become president (grandson of William Henry Harrison).

First president to have electricity in the White House – but he and First Lady Carrie Scott Harrison (daughter of a former Miami professor) were afraid to touch the power switches for fear of being electrocuted.

First president to have a “Billion Dollar Congress.”

Standing 5’6”, the second smallest president (next to James Madison).

One of the best stump speakers of his day – once gave ~140 different extempore speeches over a 30-day period.

Only president to be preceded and followed by the same person (Grover Cleveland). He lost the popular vote both times he ran.

Unsuccessfully ran for a second term in 1892 with fellow Miamian Whitelaw Reid (Class of 1856) – the only major party ticket with graduates from the same university. Despite the Miami connection, it is said that Harrison would have preferred to run a second time with his sitting vice president, Levi Morton.

Known as the “Human Iceberg” for his extremely formal and cold manner with non-family members.

Didn’t like shaking hands unless he was wearing gloves.

Alienated many fellow Republicans by basing his patronage appointments on merit rather than party service.

Was the second president whose wife died while he was in office. First Lady Carrie Scott Harrison (an alumna of Oxford Female Institute/later known as Oxford College) died of tuberculosis in 1892.
Carrie was also the first president-general of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
A talented artist, Carrie designed the state china used during her husband’s administration.

More popular after leaving office than while president. Noted historian Henry Adams described Harrison as the “best” president since Lincoln.
