  • As our Fall semester students get ready for their last week in the States before their Luxembourg adventure begins, Ville de Differdange has helped re-establish MUDEC's VIP welcoming committee. Not sure if Bonnevoie, Luxembourg, Luxembourg would agree about Ambassador Dolibois being "e stéck Déifferdeng" but we're all friends here 😀

  • We like to say that Miami University is the Red Bridge between the US and Luxembourg and MUDEC's 4th of July Party yesterday built bridges between lots of different groups.

Students got the chance to mingle with members of the American Luxembourg Society (http://www.american-luxembourg-society.lu), local Luxembourg Alumni from the Miami University Alumni Association , Luxembourgish students at Miami, local Fulbright members, and many more. Special thanks for the support from local alumni Christian Betzen from Amcellars and Brasserie Nationale

  • We know you've seen this one before, but the Schengen Agreement is so essential to the way that Luxembourg and Europe work that we try to make sure that every MUDEC student group is able to experience the Centre Européen Schengen first hand. Enclosed a post from Professor Janice Kinghorn's class visit yesterday. Study, Engage, Travel is so much easier due to the changes which the Schengen Agreement led to.

  • MUDEC, MUDEC, wherefore art thou MUDEC? As you know, MUDEC students were on a Music Study Tour to Italy this week. Finishing up the week, students saw the famous balcony from Romeo & Juliet in Verona, as well as Franco Zefferelli’s final production of Verdi‘s La Traviata in the incredible Roman arena. On tap the next night was Mozart‘s Don Giovanni at the amazing La Fenice theater in Venice and sandwiched in between, a heat-beating afternoon on Venice Beach (Lido, not LA!). And a visit to a gondola maker too.

Experiential learning outside the classroom which complements learning in the classroom, in historical and amazing places. This is the Study, Engage, Travel MUDEC experience which awaits you. Sign up for a semester or summer program now at http://miamioh.edu/MUDEC.

  • MUDEC students withstood ridiculous temperatures today to visit the Ducal Palace in Mantova before heading over to get a late afternoon and early evening taste of Venice. A late afternoon arrival when the crowds had started thinning out made it that much more enjoyable.

Oh, getting “gondola bombed” during a group picture was a unique experience too 😃

Starting with a short outdoor music class by Professor Averbach, MUDEC summer students overcame intense heat to visit the birthplace of the violin in Cremona, the birthplace of Verdi in Roncole, and the birth of a get the tiramisu cake to go and serve on the bus tradition.

  • Experiencing culture, history and throwing in a bit of travel, MUDEC summer students Engaged outside of the classroom by attending the famous Echternach Sprangprëssessioun (say that three times fast), which is on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.

The afternoon was spent in the ancient Roman city of Trier, a hop, skip and a jump away from Echternach. Students looked at economic inequality in a historical context, and the role it may have played in Rome’s downfall followed by a visit to the Karl Marx museum to learn about his views on poverty and inequality. Students were then challenged to apply what they had learned from history to those issues today.

All in a day’s Study, Engage, Travel at MUDEC!

  • For those students that are not able to attend MUDEC for a full semester, we also offer the Luxembourg Intensive Summer Program (LITS). You can find more info here: http://miamioh.edu/global-initiatives/luxembourg/academics/summer/). This program packs Study, Engage, Travel into a compact 6-week experience.

LITS includes two extended Study Tour trips, and with this summer’s first Study Tour to Hungary ending today, we wanted to give you a flavor of what they have been experiencing over the last 5 days.

Based in Budapest, the group got to experience one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, from the Fisherman’s Bastion to the Jewish Quarter. Outside of Budapest, the group also visited the Viresol Kft. wheat processing plant, the Bódvalenke, Freskófalu Roma village, and spent a day visiting Lake Balaton and the Tapolcai-tavasbarlang Lake Cave.

  • Today will be the final post for the Spring 2019 semester 😂. Continuing the theme of cool things that our students did or how they Engaged during this semester, we finish today with a post about the Progressive Dinner.

The Progressive Dinner was sponsored by the Craig Riddle Luxembourg Community Fund, which was established by MUDEC alumni in honor of Craig in order to encourage a student or a group of students in Luxembourg to interact with alumni living in the community. While Craig was a student in Luxembourg he made community involvement a priority. He encouraged others to meet and spend time with Luxembourg citizens to enhance their overseas experience.

This dinner was a 5-course extravaganza with students changing tables after each course to enable them to network with each of the invited guests. Guests from J.P. Morgan Bank Luxembourg, EXKi, the University of Luxembourg and Maison Moderne gave the students fabulous insights into their own careers and businesses.

As always, if you want a study abroad experience like this, meaning like no other, click here to get the process started: http://www.miamioh.edu/MUDEC

  • You know what we often serve up on Fridays. Except that the semester is over and we had a mega Piano Fridays extravaganza last Friday.

Nonetheless, as the Cave was clearing out on Wednesday and the halls of the chateau were going silent as students left after their exams, MUDEC's musician extraordinaire, Clay, left one last gift to the MUDEC community before heading back to the Rock and Roll Capital of the World (y'all know where I'm talking about, I hope).

Last week we said that it was the Piano Friday swan song, and we were mostly correct. So today, not on the piano, but playing a song by a band whose record label was named Swan Song, we give you, one last time, Clayton Musick.

  • Between the end of the Spring semester yesterday and the arrival of the summer students next week, we will take the next few days to highlight some of the cool things that students did this semester.

We start today with an article about MUDEC’s collaboration with local startup Spoticle and CEO Bob Krier. Spoticle just graduated from the Fit4Start accelerator at Luxinnovation. What is it? Spoticle is a recommendations app which will allow MUDEC students and staff to transfer their collective location and travel knowledge to incoming student groups through the use of guides on Spoticle. Those students will then manage and improve those guides themselves before passing them on to their successors. The beauty is that the information will almost always be up to date, is peer to peer, and is instantly available on each student’s phone.

Spring 2019 student Jackson DiCicco, aka Uncle Jackson, was fully Engaged, in between Studying and Traveling, and did a fabulous job this semester getting the project off the ground. Now up to incoming students to take that work and continue to improve and expand it for their own use as well as for future students.

What an amazing and original experience as part of a study abroad semester. Startup your own unique MUDEC study abroad experience by clicking here: http://www.miamioh.edu/MUDEC
