  • Study at MUDEC goes beyond the classroom with fantastic guest speakers such as Anže Logar, a member of parliament in Slovenia, who spoke to students this week.

Not only did they have the chance to hear about his personal experiences, the trials and tribulations of a politician, but several students also had the opportunity to attend a small reception with him afterwards. Yet another example of how unique the MUDEC experience is. Everything is up close and personal, an experience like nowhere else. • One MUDEC, three countries, no borders, and no more wall. The Student Faculty Council organized a trip to the Moselle today. After learning about wine production and the key role it plays in Luxembourg's culture and economy, students visited Schengen and learned about how the EU was born and how it has evolved to remove internal borders and currency barriers to cross-border trade and travel. From Schengen, in Luxembourg, a trip across the bridge and a left turn and you will be in Germany while a right turn and you are in France.

When you Study, Engage and Travel at MUDEC you can experience history up close and right around the corner from the Chateau. Your opportunity to experience the "100-75"* Fall 2019 semester is still possible as the registration deadline has been extended until May 1.

*Why "100-75"? It has been 100 years since the first American liberation of Luxembourg after World War I, currently shown in a brilliant exhibition at the MNHM - Musée National d'Histoire Militaire in Diekirch. In the Fall of 2019, it will be 75 years since the American army liberated Luxembourg from the Nazis in World War II as well as 75 years since the Battle of the Bulge. There will be major commemorations throughout the semester, for which you will have a front row seat, but only if you are here. Register now at http://miamioh.edu/global-initiatives/luxembourg/index.html

  • Fantastic turnout for today’s Feed Your Brain debate Should we kill to eat?. Congrats to University of Luxembourg for their victory against an excellent MUDEC team in front of an enthusiastic #mudec2019spring audience.

Special thanks to Editpress, publishers of Tageblatt and Le Jeudi, for sponsoring the event. We are very grateful as well to Lene Pedersen from LeneLife, Lea Linster, and Raf Stassen from natur&ëmwelt for offering their time to serve as judges. The deliberations went into overtime before a final decision was taken, which was a tribute to the quality of all of the debaters.

  • Discovery Tour weekend Day Deux took MUDEC students across the border into France today to visit the World War I St. Mihiel American Cemetery and Memorial and Montsec American Monument.

Special thanks to superintendent Jeff Hays for his impromptu tour and descriptions of the St. Mihiel offensive in 1918 and for pointing out the works of architect Paul Manship, whose famous Prometheus sculpture many of us have seen at the Rockefeller Center in New York.

During the afternoon we visited the first and largest fort of the Maginot Line at Ouvrage Hackenberg, less than an hour from the chateau. Engaging while Traveling to key places in the region are the main objectives of MUDEC Discovery Tours #mudec2019spring #miamioh #miamiohabroad #studyengagetravel #mudecdiscoverytours

  • Discovery Tour weekend started with a trip to the fabulous gardens of the Château d’Ansembourg. Afterwards, we headed to Clervaux where we saw the monument to GIs who fought in Clervaux during the Battle of the Bulge, we visited the amazing The Family of Man photo exhibit and the Luxembourg model castle museum, followed by a walk to the church and the Clervaux Abbey. We also stumbled upon the monument to the Peasants Revolt (Klöppelkrieg) against the French occupation in 1798. So many amazing things to see and do right around the corner from MUDEC.

  • The beauty of the Study component of the MUDEC experience is the fact that you can often touch and feel the things you learn in class outside of class.

MUDEC hosted Professor Wim Coudenys from the University of Leuven for a fascinating lecture titled “The Long Shadow of the Second World War. How the past unites and... divides Europe” With slides showing how the map of Europe was redrawn several times during the 20th century, students could see easily how many of the places they have visited have changed in the last 100 years. #studyengagetravel #mudec2019spring #miamioh #miamiohabroad Stanford Center for Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies KULeuven

  • One of the amazing things about studying at MUDEC in Luxembourg is the proximity to what is really happening in the economy and the country.

Scouting out opportunities for students today at the Arch Summit (special thanks to the British Chamber of Commerce for Luxembourg for the invite) we listened to 3-minute pitches by startups (Congrats to F4A and Hotailors for the winning pitches), learned all about the Digital Luxembourg ecosystem and heard Prime Minister Xavier Bettel speak not only about creating a sustainable and data-driven economy, but also from his heart about all of the possibilities that the EU has created for peaceful development in Europe. Study at MUDEC and you will have access to events like this.

  • To end Study Tour Week, we take you on a trip with Professor Kinghorn, whose class is Studying Economics and Traveled to Prague to Engage with different actors in the Czech economy, while also learning a bit about history as well.

As you read earlier this week, transitioning from communism to democracy and a market economy is not instant change just add water. Students got an overview of these challenges in presentations from the Confederation of Trade and Industry, the US Embassy, and the Czechinvest Business and Investment Development Agency.

Company visits included Skoda, a company which has been a big part of the Czech economy since 1895, and the Pilsner Urquell Brewery, home of the original pilsner beer, and which is a major tradition in the Czech Republic. The class also visited the Terezin concentration camp, a sobering reminder of the horrors of World War II.

Vienna? Ljubljana? Brussels? Prague? Sarajevo? You get the picture. These are the kinds of places where you will be learning outside of the classroom when you spend a semester at MUDEC. Last chance now to sign up for Fall 2019 at http://miamioh.edu/global-initiatives/luxembourg/index.html

  • Studying Anthropology, Traveling to Brussels and the Netherlands, and Engaging in colonial and post-colonial cultural encounters have been the theme of Professor Peterson’s Study Tour.

If the Brussels part of the visit looked at Belgium’s painful history with the Congo, and the attempts to re-examine that period, yesterday’s transition to the Netherlands put global trade and Dutch colonialism in Indonesia into focus.

The port of Rotterdam was the first stop, where students learned about the biggest port in Europe. The massive container ships going in and out of Rotterdam are the highway of global trade. Students also got a taste of Rotterdam architecture, renowned after the city had to be completely rebuilt after being destroyed in World War II.

To end the day, students got to experience an Indonesian rijsttafel, traditionally a meal served to impress when Indonesia was a Dutch colony and now a staple in Indonesian restaurants across the Netherlands.

If we said yesterday that Europe is your classroom at MUDEC, it actually is a window to the entire world due to Europe’s global influence historically. Yet another reason to sign up now at http://miamioh.edu/global-initiatives/luxembourg/index.html

  • Today’s story comes from Professor Briot’s Study Tour. His students are Studying Sociology and after Traveling to Slovenia (and will continue on to Bosnia), they have been Engaging in discovering the political and economic situation one generation into the country’s transition from communism to democracy.

After a first day concentrated on politics and history, yesterday’s activities focused on Slovenian tradition and heritage. Lake Bled was the first stop for an explanation of how traditional Slovenian wooden Pletna boats are crafted, followed by a trip on the lake.

Following a fabulous traditional lunch, students learned all about the importance of beekeeping at Čebelarstvo Ambrožič/ Beekeeping Ambrožič, which will be featured on the upcoming Netflix show Beyond the Kitchen. They learned a shocking statistic, that if bees were to become extinct human life would end four years later.

To end the day, students visited the Kobilarna Lipica, the Lipica Stud Farm, where they encountered the world-famous Lippizaner stallions up close and personal.

Europe is your classroom at MUDEC, where in-person learning in places like Slovenia complements what you learn in class. Sign up now at http://miamioh.edu/global-initiatives/luxembourg/index.html

  • Study Tour week is in full swing! Professor Backes’s class is Studying Music, Traveling to Vienna, and Engaging at sites from the most famous composers.

Visits to the Mozart House and Beethoven Museum took students out of the concert hall and into the lives of probably the two most famous composers. In between a visit to the House of Music to learn more about instruments and the Vienna Philharmonic.

History, Art and Garbage (yes, you read that correctly) filled out the day. First a stop in front of the Hofburg, the former Austrian Imperial Palace. Also, a stop in front of the “Garbage Tower”, Vienna’s waste incineration plant which not only generates energy, but was colorfully designed by the famous eco-architect Hundertwasser. Only in Vienna.

  • Bonjour! Goede Morgen! Grüss Gott! Servus! Dobrý den! Ahoj! Dober Dan!

As you likely have noticed from visiting this page, Study, Engage, Travel is the motto of the MUDEC program, but it is the intersection of those three elements that makes the program so unique and this week you will see that in action.

This is Study Tour week, when MUDEC students head off to different destinations across Europe with their professors to experience in person things they have been learning in those classes.

Each day for the rest of the week we will highlight one of these trips. If you are a prospective student, imagine yourself on one of these tours during a future semester. If you are a parent, this will give you a glimpse into how the combination of Study, Engage, Travel makes the MUDEC experience unlike any other study abroad program.

For everyone else, enjoy the trip around Europe. If you want to follow the trips more closely, check out our account on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mudec_luxembourg/

MUDEC students for the 2019 Fall Semester will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to relive the “Greatest Generation” while studying in Luxembourg. American troops liberated Luxembourg from Nazi occupation on September 10, 1944 and there will be a major commemoration of this historic event. Later in the semester, there will be a large-scale reconstitution of Thanksgiving 1944, with people dressed as GIs and villagers dressed as they would have been in 1944. There will be US army vehicles and field kitchens along with a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner. A group of MUDEC students will have the opportunity to participate in this incredible event.

In December 1944, the Germans launched a surprise attack and occupied much of northern Luxembourg and southeastern Belgium, a battle which become known as the Battle of the Bulge. There will be a series of commemorations for the 75th anniversary of this battle, the largest battle ever fought by the U.S. Army. Students at MUDEC will have the opportunity to attend a series of events in Luxembourg as well as Bastogne in Belgium, site of the famous American four-letter response to a German request to surrender, “Nuts”. Special thanks to GAUL's LEGACY TOURS Sarl for all the info about these events.

On Saturday, the music class ventured over to Brussels, where they toured the Museum of Musical Instruments with Professor Backes. After that, the group went to Chez Leon for a group lunch, then the students were given two hours to explore the city. On Sunday, the MUS 189 class attended an orchestra rehearsal in Luxembourg City and were given the opportunity to ask questions to conductor Christoph Koeing! To wrap up the weekend, the students grabbed a pizza dinner from Bella Napoli. By the looks on these students faces, it looks like the weekend was a success! @ Brussels, Belgium
