  • The World famous “Dusky Deamon” William Pickett is considered to be the first black cowboy star. Pickett not only performed in rodeos across the nation but starred in motion pictures like “the Bull-Dogger” and “Crimson Skull” both filmed in Oklahoma. He also singlehandedly changed rodeo competitions forever by developing a technique when he was a child. After completing a fifth grade education and worked at a ranch, Pickett would grasp steer by the horns, twist its neck, bite the nose or upper lip, and then making it fall on its side. He learned this by observing how herder dogs controlled steers. Today, cowboys across the world compete using his “bite-‘em-down” style that eventually became steer wrestling. Even after being buried in his ranch outside Ponca city, his legend lives on as “The Bill Pickett Rodeo Show” continues to tour the United States today.

  • In a time when Oklahoma statues prohibited higher education institutions from admitting potential graduate students based on the color of their skin, a retired professor named George McLaurin dared to challenge it. After being denied admission into the University of Oklahoma’s doctorate of education program, McLaurin filed a complaint to the Western District of Oklahoma in 1948, which ruled the statute unconstitutional. The Board of Regents admitted McLaurin, but only offered segregated resources. He sat at a desk separated from the rest of the class, ate at separate times than the white students, and assigned to rooms adjoining regular study rooms. McLaurin again filed suit, which led to a Supreme Court ruling that he separate but equal doctrine under the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment was unconstitutional by inhibiting a student’s ability to study, to engage in discussion and exchange view with other students, and in general to learn the profession. This landmark case was used to desegregate higher education across the southern United States.

  • We’ve all seen Michael Jordan and his number “23” leap across the court on television and in the big screens, but did you know there was another 23 who is an Oklahoma basketball legend? Wayman Tisdale, a Tulsa native, played three years of basketball for the University of Oklahoma and 12 seasons in the NBA. While playing as a Sooner, Tisdale held 17 OU basketball records and nine Big Eight Conference records. The University of Oklahoma retired Tisdale's 23 jersey in 1997, making him the school's first athlete, in any sport, to receive this honor. Tisdale also played for the 1984 gold medal-winning Olympic basketball team. Besides basketball, Tisdale was also a self-taught jazz musician, creating jazz demo albums for potential record deals. He used a synonym so his album would be based on the music, not his name. He eventually earned a record deal and played across the world while also playing for the Phoenix Suns. Before his passing in 2009, Tisdale mentored a promising Oklahoma basketball player named Blake Griffin.

  • In an area of land eight miles west of Muskogee established for Creek freedmen, the town of Twine founded in honor of William H. Twine, a former resident who edited the Muskogee Cimeter newspaper. In 1904 citizens changed the town Taft in honor of Secretary of War and future president William Howard Taft. The town quickly became a lucrative area, causing Taft to be known as the "fastest growing Colored community in Oklahoma" throughout the South. By 1910 the community supported two newspapers a cotton gin, sawmills, general stores, a brickyard, a soda pop factory, a livery stable, a gristmill, a lumberyard, two hotels and more. Establishing educational and state-agency facilities helped grow the thriving community including the Halochee Institute, W. T. Vernon School for the Deaf, Blind, and Orphans of the Colored Race, and the State Training School for Negro Girls, and two state penitentiaries. The town elected Lelia Foley-Davis as the nation's first female African American mayor. Taft is one of only thirteen All-Black Towns still existing in Oklahoma.

  • Amos T. Hall is one of the most significant civil rights lawyers in Oklahoma History. Without a formal law degree and completely self-taught, Hall was admitted to the Oklahoma Bar Association and the Tulsa County Bar association by 1925. During his time as an attorney, he fought for equal salaries for African American teachers in segregated schools, and represented Ada Lois Sipuel in the landmark case “Sipuel v. Board of Regents of University of Oklahoma” that challenged separate but equal precedents. Hall also served as attorney for the State Conference of Branches of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). By the 1960s, Hall was appointed special judge of the District Court of Tulsa County, and by 1970 he was elected associate district judge of Tulsa County, which made Hall the first African American to be elected to a countywide office and the first African American to be elected a judge in Oklahoma.
