  • We're deeply saddened to learn of Bob Hautala's passing. Bob was a beloved professor on campus who retired in June, and an earnest supporter of our students and student-athletes.

We would love to hear your memories of Bob in the comments below.

We were fortunate to get to talk with him before he retired for an article about his time at WOU. Visit the link below to learn more about Bob.

Our sincere condolences go to Bob's loved ones.

Edited to add: Bob's family decided that his dedication to WOU students made them the most logical choice for charitable giving. A new fund has been created through the WOU Foundation: the Bob "Dr. H." Hautala Student Success Fund

If you'd like to give to the fund, there are a couple of ways you can do so.

Online: Visit wou.edu/give, then select "support WOU" then "other" as the gift designation. Include Bob's name in the note line.

Check: Address it to the WOU Foundation and mention Bob's name in the memo line. Send to 345 Monmouth Ave N., Monmouth OR 97361.

  • We are so proud of senior Tyler Jones, a cross country student-athlete, who was awarded the prestigious Elite 90 award yesterday at the national championship.

The Elite 90 is given to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.

Tyler has a 4.0 GPA and is double-majoring in mathematics and business.

At yesterday's competition, he went on to register WOU's fifth-best result all-time at the national championships by placing 60th overall.

    Congratulations, Tyler!

  • The camera had a bit of trouble initially focusing with the rain, but we took a video of the countdown to the tree lighting last night.

And there's a surprise - you may notice the dark outline of an umbrella. Right there, a couple got engaged at the countdown and when the lights were turned on! Help us congratulation these two! 😍

  • Hey WOU students, alumni, employees and all beloved members of our Wolves family, we want your participation in a holiday video project!

We want to know: what do the holidays mean to you? And we'd love your answer to that question in a brief video.

Please record your response and send it our way by Nov. 30.

    Some additional details:

-Delivery options: 1) You can email your video to NewsflashTeam@wou.edu as an attachment or a link to grab it from your Google Drive/Dropbox.

Or, 2) Click the "send message" button on this page and message it to us as an attachment.

-We plan to trim responses longer than about 5-7 seconds so we can fit lots of people in the video. So if the prospect of sending a long video is holding you back, just a brief one would be great.

-Up for participating but don't want to do the filming yourself? If you're on campus, we can film you. Send a message to this page and we'll set something up for next week.

-Not sure if you should participate? Please do! We would love to have you included in the video(s).

-Will you be around other members of the WOU family for Thanksgiving? We love a good group video :)

Any other questions? Post them below or send us a message. We really hope you'll participate.

Enrollment for winter term Salem classes is open to current students. New students can learn how to apply to WOU at wou.edu/admission.

Do you know a working adult who may want to explore WOU classes in Salem? Let them know about this exciting news!

We would love to know your first-generation story in the comments so we can share them. If you'd prefer to stay anonymous, send us a message and we'll keep your story private.

Here are photos of a few stories from the first-gen celebration in the Advising Center. If you're on campus, swing by there and take a selfie and share your story.
