  • 🎉 Happy birthday, Roc! 🎉 On this day in 1909, the Panther was selected as our mascot by students and alumni. Panthers had a long tradition of being considered noble, panther alliterated well with Pitt, its gold matched the University's colors—plus no one else at that time had a panther as a mascot.

    Our Panther was later named "ROC" in honor of Steve Petro, a well respected former football player, coach, and athletic department assistant, whose nickname from his playing days under coach Jock Sutherland was "the Rock."
