  • On this day in 1819, the Pittsburgh Academy received a new charter and changed its name to the Western University of Pennsylvania. In its near 90 years, WUP saw a number of important events in our school’s history, including disastrous fires, a move to Allegheny City (now Pittsburgh’s North Side), the graduation of the university’s first African American and women students, and many more.

On February 19th from 1-4 PM, Archives & Special Collections at Pitt will host a pop-up exhibit on the ground floor of Hillman Library. Stop by to see a variety of material celebrating the WUP era!
