  • For Martha Olney, a teaching professor of economics, coming out didn’t happen all at once. As a graduate student in 1980, she met her wife, Esther Hargis. A few of their friends knew they were together, but “it wasn’t something you told people.” Esther was a Baptist pastor, so she needed to be careful at the time to protect her career. It wasn’t until the couple decided to adopt their son, Jimmy, nearly two decades later, that they decided they had to live their lives fully out. #BerkeleyPodcast

  • "I was born in South Korea, in a city called Changwon. I came to the United States when I was 9 and when I came here, I didn’t speak much English, so I became a target of bullying. I was the only Asian kid in my class in Florida. There were a lot of Korean-American people, but they didn’t speak Korean. I just couldn’t communicate well, so the bullying continued. That changed in 8th grade when I began to make a lot of friends and, from then on, my life took a turn for the better. I joined the debate club in high school, and they taught me how to speak publicly, the points of logic and how to call out logical flaws from arguments. But then in college freshman year, things took a downward spiral. The rigor of UC Berkeley was a lot harder than I expected and, on top of that, I got news from Florida that one of my friends from middle school was in a car accident and had died. He was one of those people who, when I would get bullied, would come to me and say, 'Hey, what's up, man!' — and when you’re a target of bullying, you can tell the difference between the genuine and the fake. He was the only kid in my English class who would say hi to me first. He was very genuine, so hearing that he had died and how it happened — he died in an instant. The doctor said he must have died before he even knew he was dying. A person of that caliber dying in such a way; I just couldn’t understand this death. The point of view I developed from his death was that we are born without our consent and when we die, we also don’t give our consent — because of that I didn’t see the point. I became very existentialist in a negative way. I didn’t try anymore. I made some terrible decisions. I wanted to drop out, to be honest. Then, in my second year, I came across this essay by Soren Kierkegaard called ‘The Unhappiest One’ — an existentialist essay. I read it, and the message I got from it was that an unhappy person is someone who lives in the glorious past of his days or the fantastical future of his future. This is when I learned that I’m in control of what is in between. That changed me a lot."

“Bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms support the existence of all higher lifeforms and will shape the response of plants and animals to climate change. Microbes are themselves also profoundly affected by climate change, but are rarely the focus of climate change research, education or policy.”
