  • In April, the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University and the ACLU filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of a far-reaching system of government censorship. Known as “prepublication review,” the system prohibits millions of former public servants from writing and speaking about their service without the government’s prior approval. And the government can censor their words with minimal constraints. Have you heard of this system before?

  • Today is the 75th anniversary of D-Day, marking the Allied invasion of Normandy in WWII. The largest joint military invasion in history, the operation is commemorated as the beginning of the liberation of Nazi-occupied Europe.

As it had during World War I, Columbia got behind the war effort even before the U.S. entered the conflict. A University Committee for War Relief opened a shop on Amsterdam Avenue. When the country mobilized, the university offered specialized military training and allowed students to speed up their studies (or to take time off to serve). Columbia opened a war hospital on campus and a hospital in Europe, and became a training center for 20,000 Naval officers and military administrators. All told, more than 15,000 Columbians—students, faculty, staff, and alumni—served in the war. Some 450 died in the conflict.
