  • Angelia Miranda, a double major in philosophy and international studies, will embark on the adventure of a lifetime next year as a 2019 Bonderman Fellow. Each year, a small group of University of Washington students are awarded with Bonderman Travel Fellowships, which fund independent travel in order to “inspire individual transformation by expanding the fellow’s understanding of themselves and the complex, diverse and interconnected world we live in.”
For her travels, Miranda is heading to parts of the world that have captured her imagination in the past, including Mongolia, Russia and China via the Trans-Siberian Railway, Buenos Aires, and Cambodia.

  • Ocean acidification is a global phenomenon. Worldwide, the ocean plays an invaluable service to the planet by absorbing nearly 30% of the carbon dioxide produced by human activity. Yet this also drives a series of reactions that change seawater chemistry, and as a result the oceans are becoming more acidified, which poses a suite of problems to some marine organisms.

Did you know that until 1933 the bridge was actually wooden? Due to the need to replace the wood every ten or so years, the steel mesh was installed. And did you know that the University Bridge was originally to be named the 10th Avenue Bridge? #FunFacts #TBT

  • Overcoming the odds: While earning her UW Ph.D., Yolanda Valencia researched how recent immigrants to the U.S. thrived here despite the odds — just like she did.

“I feel that I’m doing my best for the next generation, so they can see themselves in this role,” says Valencia, who admits that achieving her dream of becoming a professor this fall when she joins the University of Maryland-Baltimore County “still feels unreal” to her. “I know I’m not the only woman of color in academia, but I am one of very few. And we need more.”

  • Yesterday, the UW announced the topping out of the new $230 million Population Health Building. The UW also has selected two artists whose work will help tell the story of the education and research that will take place within the new facility.

“We’re excited to work collaboratively with both of these fine artists as they help to create an inspiring and transformative experience for the tenants and guests in the new building to improve population health,” said Ali Mokdad, chief strategy officer for Population Health and a professor of health metrics sciences at the UW.

That’s why I’m pleased that the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has made a significant investment to create the UW Center for an Informed Public," writes UW President Ana Mari Cauce.

Read more about how this new center will work to resist strategic misinformation, promote an informed society and strengthen democratic discourse.
