  • UAFS, will host its fourth annual Rising in the River Valley tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. The event is a local commitment to One Billion Rising’s global action to end sexual assault and domestic violence, and will be held on Kinkead Ave., on the UAFS campus. A program will start at noon and a hot dog lunch will be provided.

“It is so important to show our students the strength of their voices to incite change,” said UAFS Interim Chancellor Dr. Edward Serna. “On this campus and in this community, we have the power to make a global impact, and events like Rising in the River Valley further our mission to empower the diverse populations we serve.”

Around the world, participants in the global action to end violence will participate in various forms of demonstration, collectively calling for change. At UAFS a community dance of solidarity will be led by Megan Park with Chance 2 Dance Studio. A symbolic march will then be led around campus, in which attendees can hold signs advocating for a world free of violence and assault.

  • UAFS has been named a 2018 Tree Campus USA®, by the Arbor Day Foundation!

“At UAFS we continually strive to be good neighbors and good stewards of our environment,” said UAFS Interim Chancellor Dr. Edward Serna. “This designation recognizes a great success on those fronts, and we are proud to not only have a beautiful campus, but one that offers student-learning opportunities and engages our campus in the spirit of conservation.”

“Because of UAFS’ participation, its air will be purer, water cleaner, and students and faculty will be surrounded by the shade and beauty the trees provide,” said Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation.

UAFS is one of just 364 campuses across the United States to earn this recognition!

  • Mary Beth Andrews dedicates most of her time to smiles, preserving them as a dental hygiene student and creating them as captain of the UAFS cheer team.

The 20-year-old junior from West Fork has found ways to use the leadership training she's received at UAFS in every area of her academic and athletic life.

“Cheerleading is a sport that takes every single member of the team,” she said. “Learning to rely on others and support them when they need me is going to benefit me when I become part of a dental team.”

Andrews also said that a big part of being cheer captain is being able to make quick decisions under pressure.

“These decisions have to be made quickly with the pressure of the whole team looking at me and waiting on my response. They are trusting me to guide them in the right direction. This is extremely similar to the trust that my future patients will place in me when they come to me seeking dental care.”

  • The Dental Hygiene program at UAFS will sponsor free afterschool dental clinics Feb. 12 and March 12, 2019, for area children through the UAFS Smilz Kid’s Clinic.

Preventive services will include a dental cleaning and exam, X-rays, fluoride treatments and sealants to prevent cavities.

Maricela Gonzalez, a senior UAFS dental hygiene student who has participated in the Smilz program in previous years, explained that the opportunity to connect with children in a clinical setting not only improves her understanding of dental procedures, but also the children’s.

"We hope this helps them get over any preliminary fear of dental care and that they will find a dental home and be happy to go,” she said.

The free clinics are made possible through a grant from the Blue & You Foundation for a Healthier Arkansas.
