  • In another effort to create the most valuable college experience for our students, UAFS has launched a Fast Track completion program in the Department of World Languages.

The program allows Spanish-proficient students the opportunity to complete their Bachelor's degree in Spanish or Spanish Education in just seven semesters, potentially saving students a full semester and thousands of dollars according to department head Dr. Mary Sobhani

"I saved money, and I saved time, and when you're a college student, both of those things are precious," said alumna Paulina García Zavala, who graduated from UAFS in 2019.

"It has always been my dream to become a Spanish teacher," added Juan Alex Velázquez. "With the fast-track, that dream is becoming a reality, and my bank account is happier."

  • As a fifth-generation Arkansan, Booneville native Kayley Corley never imagined herself living anywhere else. But when she was awarded a prestigious John Paul Hammerschmidt Fellowship during her senior year at UAFS, that all changed.

Corley earned a political science degree from UAFS in May of 2017, and following her graduation, spent the summer working in Congressman Steve Womack’s Washington, D.C. office as a UAFS JPH Fellow.

“Those six weeks in D.C. were some of the most challenging of my life, but if it weren’t for the JPH Fellowship, I wouldn’t have had the courage to come back to D.C.,” she said.

Corley, who recently earned her master’s degree in public service and administration from the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University, is back in D.C., this time as a full-time legislative correspondent for Congressman Bruce Westerman. Corley says she is thrilled to be able to make a significant impact in her home state.

“I love Arkansas, and making sure Arkansans’ voices are being heard is one of the best things about my life.”

In addition to working for Congressmen Womack and Westerman, Corley has also previously served as an intern for Senator John Boozman, and she attributes a great deal of her success in government to her time at UAFS.

“I would not be in the position I am now without the network I built at UAFS,” she said. “I was never ‘only a student’ at UAFS. There were countless people who saw something in me and chose to invest in me. UAFS was never just a school. It was a community and a home.”

  • When high school stand-out Casey Ludolph arrived at UAFS for her campus visit - the very last on her college tour list - she knew right away she’d found her home.

“As soon as I started walking around, I had this feeling of excitement. It felt like home. I was ready; this was it," Casey said. “I couldn’t wait to get home and tell everyone that, no matter where else I was accepted, UAFS was for me.”

Casey graduated this spring, and has already accepted a teaching position at Pea Ridge Schools. She thanks UAFS for more than just her degree, though.

"This is where I found Casey," she says. "UAFS made me who I am.”

  • UAFS has partnered with ABB to introduce the first Youth Apprenticeship Program for advanced manufacturing in the state of Arkansas. The collaborative program was launched at the Fort Smith Area Chamber of Commerce Signing Day on May 3 when nine students from six local high schools officially joined ABB as apprentices.

“Developing our programs alongside the business community ensures we are delivering students with critical skills that are in high demand,” said Ken Warden, dean of the College of Applied Science and Technology at UAFS. “These students will not only have the opportunity to apply what they learn in school in a real-world environment, but they will also receive a regular paycheck while completing their high school careers.”

The ABB program targets rising high school juniors and seniors ages 16-18 who are enrolled in advanced manufacturing career and technical education programs at the university.

Once they are accepted into the program, they will work full time for ABB over the summer and part time during the school year while attending high school and earning technical concurrent college credit.

  • Four UAFS students spent their fall semester immersed in Spanish language and Chilean culture as part of their study abroad requirement for their degrees in Spanish.

Spanish majors Miraya Marciano and Jordan Pomeroy studied at the Universidad de Santiago de Chile in Santiago, taking courses in international relations, government, and history, as part of their studies in the Spanish program at UAFS. Spanish majors Makayla Newby of Alma and Catherine González of Van Buren studied at the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa Maria, also in Santiago, Chile.

“It’s definitely taught me how to acclimate to another culture fast and to appreciate my own culture in the U.S.,” Marciano said. “You meet a lot of people from different backgrounds and see their different lifestyles and work ethics.”

In their courses, Marciano and Pomeroy learned about how the United States interacts with Latin American governments and how those interactions affect citizens of both nations. With aspirations to work in international relations or civil services in a Latin American country, they found the experience to be valuable preparation for their career goals.
