  • UA Little Rock has created a new pilot mentoring program to help first-year and transfer students and is looking for staff volunteers to serve as mentors. The goal of this new student success initiative is to help new students find the resources they need to be successful in their college career and to increase student retention.

“Mentoring is a dynamic way to connect seasoned staff members with new members of the community,” said Heather Reed, director of student retention initiatives. “By helping the campus feel smaller and easier to navigate, mentors can help reduce stress, guide new students, and help build a positive relationship with students where students feel comfortable asking for assistance.”

The meeting will mark the first time in modern history the two teams will meet and the first time in modern history the Razorbacks will face any opponent from the state of Arkansas in the regular season.

"This game is very exciting for the state of Arkansas and something the people in the state have wanted for years," said Head Coach Joe Foley, who boasts nearly 790 career wins. "We will be making history starting this series just like our baseball team did last spring. The women's basketball game will be great for the state and great for both programs."

  • Two UA Little Rock students are in awe over all the support shown for their dog rescue shelter simulation game, whose $16,000 fundraising campaign on Kickstarter was reached in just over 48 hours.

"We have been totally blown away by the amount of support that we’ve received for this project. Locally and around the world, people have flocked to us because they believe in what we are trying to do, and it’s an extraordinary feeling to see that reflected in our Kickstarter’s success."

Olivia Dunlap and her partner, Tanner Marshall, have been designing "To The Rescue" for nearly three years. In the game, a player is the sole volunteer who is responsible for running the shelter, taking care of the dogs, and making sure they are adopted into their forever homes.

"Even though we’ve met our goal, the fundraising campaign isn’t over. It’s going to continue until Sept. 3 so that we can increase our budget to make an even bigger, better game. Upon release of the game, 20% of all profits will be donated to real animal shelters. It just wouldn’t feel right to make a game promoting the needs of shelters and not put a substantial amount of our profits towards the cause."

  • As Arkansas honors the 100th anniversary of the Elaine Massacre this year, a lucky find by UA Little Rock alum Joseph Alley is helping to uncover more secrets surrounding one of the worst race massacres in the country’s history.

Joseph Alley, a 2016 UA Little Rock graduate and curator of the Helena Museum of Phillips County, recently discovered the minute book of American Legion Post 41 in Helena. The minute book has entries from the post’s inception in 1919, the same year the Elaine Massacre occurred, through 1925.

UA Little Rock’s Dr. Brian Mitchell, who is studying the records, said the records are significant because they show a history of those who were directly involved in the Elaine Massacre and show some of the motivations behind their actions.

“We know that the first interaction that the sharecroppers union had after the Hoop Spur shooting came from a group of deputized American Legion members who had just returned from World War I,” Mitchell said. “One of the things that minute book reveals are the efforts that were made by the general populace to ensure, even before trial, that the leaders of the Progressive Farmers and Household Workers Union would be sentenced to death.”

  • These Trojans made it out to shop at the Campus Garden during one of its new farmstand events over the weekend. In the farmstand model, people make donations as they can and then pick whatever they want from the garden.

“The donations all go straight back into the garden and helping the community,” said Marion Richard, president of the Campus Garden Alliance. “I want people to know about the importance of community. We would not have this beautiful garden without all of the people who help us. This garden is a labor of love.”
