  • As an undergraduate, Kelly Ireland was a star in the Journalism and Public Communications at UAA program and editor of the student newspaper, The Northern Light, but she was also falling in love with biology. Kelly double majored in both subjects and since then has pursued biological research for her master's degree, studying stickleback fish and microbes that degrade crude oil.

"Journalists ask why a lot and so do scientists," Kelly says, "and I think I'm a very curious person."

  • How many times have you changed your major or career? Tyler Morris originally came to UAA to pursue a degree in justice. After graduating in 2008 and working for eight years in the Alaska Court System, he returned to UAA as a nursing student.

β€œOriginally, my plan was to go to law school and help people in that capacity,” Morris said. β€œI have a lot of respect for attorneys, especially the ones who work in the public defender’s office. But for me, I wanted a more interpersonal way to help people. I didn’t know what I was going to go into until my sixth or seventh year, and then I saw nursing as a way to do that.”

She learned about tourism at Visit Anchorage, worked with the Alaska Seafood and Marketing Institute and is now the marketing manager for NANA Management Services (NMS), which oversees UAA Seawolf Dining and Catering.
