Comprised of a box containing a model and several photographs and topographical diagrams, James Turrell's work refers to the 400,000-year-old dormant volcano at a site near Flagstaff, Arizona that Turrell began β€œconverting” into an astronomical observatory. This model consists of photographs and a sculptural maquette and is made from soil taken directly from the site.

This work and others from the UCI Institute and Museum for California Art's Buck Collection are on view in the UCI Claire Trevor School of the Arts galleries through Jan. 5.

  • #AnteatersofUCI: Teerath Majumder

Teerath is a first year student in the Ph.D. program in Integrated Composition, Improvisation, and Technology in the UCI Claire Trevor School of the Arts. He is a musician and composer whose work contains elements of Hindustani classical vocals and electronic music.

He lived in Chennai, India and London before coming to UCI. He says of his new home:

"I like the people, they are so interactive compared to other places I've been. I was in London for years. The environment there is so focused on work. You forget that there are people around you."

He cites French electronic music composer Eliane Radigue as a major musical influence:

"Her influence was more from Tibetan meditation. Her music can span for hours but there are sort of constant drones interrupted by different noises or melodies. It's really good to listen to if you're trying to sleep. I don't say that as a criticism, it's a compliment."
