  • CADETS OF THE MONTH (NOVEMBER) // This month Engine Company has nominated both Cadet Kevyn Huntsman and Cadet Stephen Rosenfeld for Cadet of the month. Both Cadet Huntsman and Rosenfeld took action when others did not. Driving along the 80 they witnessed a motorist hit a dog and drive off. Cadet Hunstman and Cadet Rosenfeld pulled over, dragged the dog out of the lanes of traffic, and initially addressed the injuries to the dog. Working with a passerby, the dog was able to be driven to a vet.

  • Senior Global Studies and Maritime Affairs major Bethany Johnson has been awarded a prestigious Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship.

The program – funded by the U.S. Department of State – prepares a select annual group for Foreign Service careers in the U.S. Department of State. The fellowships prepare men and women, whose academic backgrounds match the skill needs of the State Department, to represent America's interests abroad. Johnson was chosen for the 2019 cohort of 30 fellows from more than 800 applicants.

Students are chosen based on a demonstrated intellectual background, dedication, integrity, cultural adaptability, and communication skills. Johnson is the first Cal Maritime student to be awarded this fellowship.

  • Today some of Cal Maritime's future female leaders (Alissa Gunter - panelist, Harriet Lawler, and Nadia Barrios Seanz) made a splash at the Port of Long Beach's annual Women in Trade Luncheon. They shared their journey into the Maritime industry with local students, and senior deck cadet Alissa spoke on a panel alongside accomplished women in Maritime. We hope their stories inspired the next generation of Keelhualers. The group ended the day with an exclusive tour of Foss Maritime and a Foss tug. Special thanks to @Fossmaritime and alumna @piersonerin for the arrangements!

  • [AIR QUALITY UPDATE ] Campus Closure Due to Air Quality at 5:00 p.m. Today

Based upon forecasts for deteriorating air quality as a result of fires in the region, all classes and campus activities are canceled as of 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 15. All classes and business will continue until 5:00 p.m. today, Thursday, November 15. The campus will remain closed through Friday, November 16. Campus dining services, residence halls and essential services will remain open through Friday for those students with airline tickets or riding home on Saturday. Essential services will follow prearranged schedules, including shipboard watchstanding, dining services, police, facilities, IT, and the Student Health Center.

Please contact your professor for information about classes which were scheduled to be held outdoors.

Faculty, staff, and students are welcome on campus Friday if the air quality is better on campus than at home. We plan to re-open the campus on Monday for scheduled staff/faculty work days, pending an improved AQI forecast.

Masks will continue to be available in the Police Department lobby (access with your port pass), library, CDO Office in the Marine Programs Building, with the RHOs on Duty, and on the ship’s quarterdeck.

For emergencies, call 911. For non-emergency medical issues, visit the Student Health Center or call 707-654-1170.

  • [AIR QUALITY UPDATE] Classes and Campus Business Resume Tuesday

Classes will be held and University business will operate as scheduled on Tuesday, November, 13.

While forecasts currently call for improving air conditions, everyone – especially individuals with heightened sensitivity – should continue to exercise caution.

Please limit your outdoor activities. Masks will continue to be available in the Police Department lobby (access with your port pass), library, CDO Office in the Marine Programs Building, with the RHOs on Duty, and on the ship’s quarterdeck. Questions about specific classes may be directed to professors.

Cal Maritime administration continues to monitor air quality forecasts from several sources, including Spare the Air.

If circumstances change, further information will be provided by email, social media channels, and the Cal Maritime website.

Many of our friends, neighbors, and relatives have been impacted by the fires in neighboring counties. Students who need special accommodations may contact the Student Affairs Office at 707-654-1190. Faculty and staff may contact Human Resources at 707-654-1135.

  • “Since the birth of our nation patriots have stepped forward to serve our country and defend our way of life. With honor and distinction, generations of servicemen and women have taken up arms to win our independence, preserve our Union and secure our freedom. From the Minutemen to Our post 9/11 generation These heroes have put their lives on the line So that we may live in a world that is safer, freer and more just and we owe them a profound debt of gratitude. On Veteran’s Day we salute the soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen who have rendered the highest service that any American can offer and we rededicate ourselves to fulfilling our commitment to all those who served in our name.” Wyatt Sebourn, Commander, Corps of Cadets
