  • After 10 years as the dean for our College of Environmental Design, Michael Woo is retiring.

Woo raised the profile of ENV, presiding over nationally ranked programs, including graphic design (9th in the nation), landscape architecture (ranked 10th nationally) and the department of architecture (ranked 12th in the country).

In addition to his many accomplishments as our dean, Woo was the first Asian-American elected to the Los Angeles City Council and the first city official to demand a change in leadership in the Los Angeles Police Department after the 1991 beating of Rodney King.

We'll miss you Dean Woo! Wishing you a happy retirement!

  • We lost one of our own Wednesday when Cal Poly Pomona alumnus José Flores Velázquez was killed in a drive-by shooting near his family home in Los Angeles. The 2018 physics graduate was a doctoral student at UC Irvine, thanks in part to the Cal-Bridge Program he entered in 2016 while at CPP.

"José was exactly the kind of student Cal-Bridge was designed for," Cal-Bridge Director and CPP Physics and Astronomy Professor Alexander Rudolph said, "someone with so much ability and promise that the program could help to make it to graduate school."

Velázquez was hoping to eventually work at NASA after finishing the Ph.D. program at University of California, Irvine. He was awarded an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship to fund his graduate work while still at CPP and conducted research at CPP, Harvard and Northwestern. He even presented his research on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

"José was a kind, loving person whose sunny optimism lifted up everyone around him," Rudolph said. "This is a terrible loss for his friends and family and all of us who knew him."

  • Architecture + Engineering + Mars = The XHab Innovation Challenge.

Thanks to a $30,000 competitive grant from NASA, CPP students from two disciplines collaborated to design and build a prototype of a Mars habitat for astronauts.

There were plenty of problems to be solved during the 20-week course, to put it lightly, many of which were discussed with actual NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration engineers along the way.

This interdisciplinary project exemplifies our learn-by-doing philosophy. Read more in CPP Magazine: http://bit.ly/CPPXhabChallenge
