  • When Derek Parker needed both a place to finish his bachelor's degree and a home for the paramedic program he ran, he turned to Sacramento State. Today, Parker is a battalion chief with the Sacramento Fire Department, and the program -- the first and still only such program in the California State University -- is, though its graduates, making an impact locally and statewide. #MadeAtSacState

  • President Robert S. Nelsen has shared the following message with the campus community:

‪On Wednesday afternoon, I received an email with a photo of a light pole on campus, on which someone had spray-painted the word “Jew.” We do not know how many days the graffiti had been there, and we do not know who wrote it. I am thankful to the student who brought this to our attention and is following one of the tenets of our Hornet Honor Code: “Engage daily with mutual trust, care, and integrity.”‬

‪While I usually feel that it is important not to give people or groups attention for graffiti or hateful messages, I feel compelled to do so now, as we are in a holy and sacred time for so many on our campus. We are a splintered nation, but we cannot be a splintered Hornet Family. We must come together. So many have suffered in this nation and around the world due to hate. We must learn from the past and refute hate and bigotry on our campus and in our community.‬

    Sincerely,
    Robert S. Nelsen

  • More than 1,300 students, faculty, staff and community members participated during last week's Out of the Darkness walk for suicide prevention, with another 700 registrants showing their support virtually, the most ever in the eight-year history of the event on campus. Thank you to all those who walked -- in person or virtually -- and helped send the message that those who are struggling are not alone, and we are a #HornetFamily that supports one another.

  • Included in the expanded University Union are new offices for campus organizations that serve students' basic needs. The new ASI Food Pantry has twice the number of shelving units and, for the first time, a refrigerator that will allow it to store produce and other perishables. Just a few steps away is the CARES (Crisis Assistance & Resource Education Support) Office, home to the campus case manager and student emergency services.

  • To better protect California from wildfires, Sacramento State Assistant Professor of Geography Anna Klimaszewski-Patterson says we should take a cue from the people who have lived here for thousands of years. Her recent, award-winning research looked at 1,500 years of the state's forest history and found that the composition of the forest was likely the result of deliberate burning by Native Americans, not natural phenomena like lightning strikes.

  • Ready to make a difference: Sacramento State students interested in becoming teachers or working in the nonprofit sector had an opportunity to meet directly with employers during today's Education and Social Impact Career Fair, held in the University Union. More than 100 school districts, charter schools and nonprofits were in attendance to meet with students and even conduct on-site interviews.

The Sacramento native, who came to Sac State initially to study computer science before deciding he wanted to be a physics professor, changed course again when a job at Pixar became available. Today, his film credits as a technical director include "Brave," "Up," "Coco," and the upcoming "Toy Story 4." #MadeAtSacState

  • President Robert S. Nelsen has shared the following message with the campus community:

I am devastated to share the extremely sad news that one of our students, Will Molina, died after a pellet gun shooting at an off-campus gathering early this morning. Will was a business major with an emphasis in entrepreneurship. He graduated from Folsom High School, was an active member of Pi Kappa Alpha, and was on track to graduate from Sacramento State this May.

I am heartbroken over the loss of this young man, and I know that the Hornet Family mourns with Will’s family. We will have grief counseling services available for everyone who needs support during this difficult time, and we will share information as it is available.

Our hearts go out to Will’s friends and family, and we are working with family on arrangements to honor his memory.

    Sincerely,

    Robert S. Nelsen

  • ICYMI: Student and community entrepreneurs brought their best ideas to our Carlsen Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship on Friday, April 5, for the Future 4 & More pitch competition. Welcomed by business legend and alumnus Dale Carlsen (second from right), the event encourages great business ideas — and ways to turn them from dream to reality. Students from schools including Chico State, Sierra College and the Los Rios community colleges joined Sac State stars in competing. Hats off to these future business leaders! #MakingItHappenAtSacState

  • Tonight, the Hornet Family will gather in front of The WELL at 5:30 p.m. for the Out of the Darkness Walk for suicide prevention. When a PR class partnered with Student Health and Counseling Services to promote the event, they had a brilliant idea: The 10-for-10 challenge -- 10 pushups to get 10,000 people out to the walk. They asked the community to take the challenge, and the response has been amazing!

Thank you to the students who raised awareness about this great cause, which goes far beyond a social media campaign. It's about each of us reaching out to our loved ones who are struggling -- and for them, it's about knowing that they are not alone, that there is help and there is hope. The #HornetFamily is here for you.

  • Suicide takes a terrible toll among college students across the nation. The Send Silence Packing exhibit brought that home yesterday in the Library Quad. The backpacks, many donated by families and friends in honor of their loved ones, represented the staggering number of college students nationwide lost to suicide each year. Nearby, students wrote positive notes to their classmates who may be struggling.

Join us Thursday, April 11 for the Out of the Darkness Campus Walk to support those affected by suicide. A resource fair starts at 4 p.m. at The WELL, followed by the walk at 5:30 p.m. Register here: https://bit.ly/2YQzTz8

  • This week, Sacramento State puts the spotlight on suicide prevention with two powerful events, the "Send Silence Packing" exhibit and the eighth annual Out of the Darkness Walk, as well as several other activities. The week, as President Nelsen wrote in his message to the campus community, is a call "not only to remember and honor those whose lives have been lost to suicide, but to take action to help raise awareness surrounding the topic of mental health and suicide so that no student ever feels alone or afraid to seek services."
