  • “This is not an art collection. This is a story about the venues, the poster artists, the pioneering radio stations that brought rock ‘n’ roll and rock to Sacramento, and the rock bands that played here.”

Sacramento's rock music history has found a new home in the University Library, thanks to alum Dennis Newhall.

  • Today, Associated Students, Inc. holds the first Pop Up Food Pantry of 2019, through which Sacramento State students in need can obtain free produce. Far too many Sac State students have difficulty affording the cost of food and other basic necessities, and hunger can quickly become a significant barrier to graduation. In addition to the “Pop Up” Pantry, ASI also operates a Food Pantry that is open in Yosemite Hall five days a week. Both are funded almost entirely from community donations, with the goal of alleviating hunger in our student community.

The Pop Up Pantry is open today from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Library Quad. For more information: http://www.asi.csus.edu/programs/food-pantry/

  • “That’s really important, for us to humanize folks that are going through this really challenging time in their lives.”

Sacramento State is committed to its community, and this week, our students demonstrated that commitment in a big way. On Wednesday and Thursday, about 300 Hornets participated in the Homeless Point-In-Time Count in Sacramento, a biennial census of Sacramento County’s homeless to help determine funding levels that support homelessness issues. The information gathered by the 1,000 or so volunteers who hit the streets will be analyzed by faculty researchers in Sac State’s Division of Social Work, with the results expected to be released in June 2019. Thank you to our amazing students and faculty for their role in this important public service!

  • “We need community healing -- I'm talking about laws and policy and culture. … We need to recognize the urgency of this moment. … Let’s work together. Let’s heal together.”

Longtime activist Tarana Burke, founder of the #MeToo movement, brought her story and her message of helping survivors of sexual assault to a crowd of 1,100 Thursday night in the University Union Ballroom. Survivors, she said, “needed to be heard, they needed to be seen, they needed to be believed.” We are proud of Unique Programs and other campus organizations for hosting this inspiring agent of social change on our campus. #HornetFamily #MakingItHappenAtSacState

  • Jesus Limon Guzman is demographically a Dreamer. Philosophically he’s a bit of one as well. But did he ever imagine he would find himself attending a State of the Union address in person? “Never, no,” he said. “This is ridiculous.” It’s his reality, though. Limon Guzman, a lecturer in Sacramento State’s Department of English, was invited to be Congresswoman Doris Matsui’s personal guest at tonight’s address.

Matsui, he said, wanted to invite people who stand for issues she’s most concerned with and that impact the community she represents. Limon Guzman is there to represent the immigrant community of the United States, of California and of Sacramento. “I think it’s a great honor, but I want to think about it from the perspective of the students I work with, our Dreamer community and DACA recipients,” he said. “I want to keep putting that into my perspective. That representation matters. Your stories do matter. If you can find it to be vulnerable and tell your story, people listen.”

  • Dressing professionally is an important part of a job interview. But for many students, the cost of a new suit, shirt, or pair of shoes can be prohibitive. To help, Sacramento State is partnering with JCPenney to offer students and alumni deep discounts on dress clothes and other services such as professional headshots. Last year's event was attended by more than 500 students and alumni, with an average savings of $200. This year's event will take place on Sunday, Feb. 10. More details: https://bit.ly/2S8zubG
