  • CU Boulder Theatre & Dance recently replaced just over half of the University Theatre’s existing incandescent lighting equipment with energy-efficient versions, featuring light-emitting diodes, or LEDs. The $140,000 addition will consume one-tenth the power of incandescent lights, while vastly reducing waste and equipment.

The new system is the product of months of cross-campus collaboration, funded by the CU Environmental Center, Utility and Energy Services, CU Boulder College of Arts & Sciences, the Theatre & Dance department and the Colorado Shakespeare Festival.

  • "When we invest in education, we're investing in our communities," Suzanne Hoover said. "We're hopeful that our gift inspires others to do the same."

Thanks to the generosity of CU Boulder supporters Suzanne and Dave Hoover, the CU Boulder School of Education is well on its way to getting a new home featuring state-of-the-art learning labs and dynamic collaborative spaces.

The Hoovers are donating $2.5 million toward a renovation project that will help the school transform space in its future new home in the Fleming Building. They are also donating $2.5 million to support CU Boulder College of Music, Center for Western Civilization, Thought & Policy and CU Athletics (Colorado Buffaloes).

“The Hoovers recognize the need for shaping great educators and strong leaders,” said Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano. “Through their gift, the Hoovers are creating a legacy of support for future generations of students, educators and leaders at CU Boulder.”

  • For years, researchers have pursued a strange phenomenon: When you hit an ultra-thin magnet with a laser, it abruptly de-magnetizes. Imagine the magnet on your refrigerator suddenly falling off.

Now, scientists here are digging into how magnets recover from that change, regaining their properties in a fraction of a second.

  • Through the University of Colorado Boulder’s Air Quality Inquiry project, students are asking questions like: how does air quality differ around dogs versus cats? Near old cars versus new cars? At basketball games versus swim meets? Or inside boys’ locker rooms versus girls’ locker rooms?

“Seeing kids who aren’t typically excited about science doing well and presenting on topics that really interest them is so rewarding,” said junior Kelsea Keenan, a mechanical engineering student at CU Boulder.

Over the course of the year, she and her classmates in CU Boulder Engineering have been learning about air quality and mentoring high school students across Colorado.

  • Congratulations to CU Boulder Professor Kristi Anseth on her election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences earlier this week!

“Kristi Anseth has been on the forefront of biomaterials research for the past two decades,” said Charles Musgrave, chair of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering.

“Her pioneering work has led the field by applying the principles of chemical engineering to the development of engineered tissues that could someday be key technologies in regenerative medicine. Her election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is another well-deserved recognition of her many contributions to this important field of research.”

Anseth joins at least 30 current or former CU Boulder faculty members in the Academy and is the first from CU Boulder Engineering to be inducted.
