  • Meet Bella Cordon, Lizbeth Cortez Contreras and Megan Tate. They’re peer staff and participants in the Center for Human Enrichment (CHE) at UNC, studying Nursing, Psychology, Nutrition, Human Services, and Spanish between them.

Their first year at UNC, they lived on the same floor and took part in academic workshops, team-building exercises and personal challenges like taking a leap of faith from a 40-foot pole at UNC’s high ropes course — something that now reminds them they are capable of doing things that scare them.

“It was a physical barrier that represented a mental barrier in all this,” Bella says.

Now, as peer staff with CHE, they work with and volunteer alongside new CHE students. Last year, they cleaned a section of the Poudre River Trail Corridor, where a 21-mile paved recreational path runs from Greeley to nearby Windsor.

“It was really cool because we were all doing a common task, and it brought us together,” Bella says. “And we were doing something beneficial to the community also.”

They found the trail to be a hidden gem in Greeley — Bella, who grew up in the outdoor paradise of Glenwood Springs, told her twin sister about it, and now her twin longboards there with her boyfriend.

Lizbeth was also surprised. “I was like, ‘Wait, there's another part of Greeley?’" she says.

In addition to learning new conservation skills, the volunteering assignment affirmed the trio’s love of building community and helping others.

“My passion in life is to help people,” Megan says.

  • Meet Darcy Ficek!

Darcy is a recent UNC graduate who earned a degree Journalism and Media Studies with an emphasis in Strategic Communications and a minor in Political Science. Darcy is also a Greeley native and volunteer at the Weld County Humane Society, and at UNC, she was a reporter and writer for the UNC Mirror and president of the Law Club of UNC.

“My guilty pleasure is 100% animals,” she says. “I love spending time with every kind of animal there is, and it’s easy for me to get distracted at the slightest glance of one.”

Darcy got involved with Law Club her sophomore year at UNC because she wants to attend law school but UNC does not offer an official pre-law program. Darcy’s goal is to go to law school so that she can become an attorney or political reporter and be an advocate for misrepresented and minority groups in society. Her main focus as the president of the Law Club of UNC has been to increase the club’s presence around campus so that students can use it as a resource for any part of the law school or career process.

  • UNC has new tenants on campus — thousands of them! In Ross Hall, an observable bee hive was installed with hardworking honeybees fortifying their new home .

UNCO Biological Sciences Professor Teresa Higgins, Ph.D., and Elementary Teacher Education students Ness Medina and Mollie Brandt spent the past year preparing for the beehive as well as taking beekeeping classes through the Northern Colorado Beekeepers Association.

From worker bees to drones, nurse bees and, of course, the queen, you’ll see all types of bee behaviors. This includes observing bees making beeswax, the waggle dance, cleaning the hive, and caring for the queen as well as the eggs, larvae and pupae, also known as the brood.

The public is welcome to visit the hive whenever the building is open. Learn more: https://www.unco.edu/news/articles/observable-beehive-installed-ross-hall.aspx

  • Meet Sarah Timby!

Sarah is an Elementary Education major from Fort Collins who enjoys rock
climbing, skateboarding and paddleboarding. Sarah is an RA and loves the inclusivity of UNC and the fact that everyone treats one another with respect. Her faith is a big part of her identity, and she says that her ability to be inclusive comes from the love God has shown her to spread to others. Sarah is Orthodox Christian and is a member of Bear Catholic. “They’re like a family on campus for me, and even though I’m not Catholic, they love me because of my difference.”
