  • ⚠️While there is no known threat to a college or university in the state, there will be an increased law enforcement presence on campus today in light of an FBI search for an individual in the Denver metro area.

Extra precautions we’re taking will include increased patrols on campus and in the vicinity. We remain in constant contact with local and state authorities.

UNC Police patrol campus 24 hours a day. Residence halls are locked 24 hours a day and require card access.

  • It's Appreciation Week!

There’s no question that our campus is beautiful and has evolved continuously over the past 100-plus years. Did you know that the money to build the first building at UNC (then the State Normal School in 1890) was raised by Greeley citizens? Their early philanthropy is one of the reasons we get to appreciate this beautiful campus every day!

If you're on campus, stop by one the tables located in the UC, dining halls, Michener Library and other places around campus to write a postcard that shares what you appreciate most here at UNC, and leave a comment below about your favorite parts of campus!

  • UNC was recognized by Xcel Energy for saving the most energy in the state using a self-directed program🏆💡. In 2018, UNC saved 3.1 million kWh, which equates to enough energy to power about 281 homes annually. Over that time, UNC also saved 1,794 metric tons of carbon-dioxide emissions, or the equivalent of removing about 378 cars from roads in a year.

  • Every day, almost 25,000 young people age 15-25 are infected with a sexually transmitted disease, and the most effective way to combat this is by providing free access to and using condoms, according to the organization Advocates for Youth.

Colorado School of Public Health at UNC graduate student Brianna Kelly won 500 condoms from the organization's Great American Condom Campaign last fall. Reactions to this news differ from raised eyebrows and surprise to a chuckle and curiosity, but one thing is certain: Kelly wants to bring awareness to how a growing public health issue on college campuses can be deterred by passing out condoms.

"College-aged students have some of the highest rates of STIs and pregnancy, so improving access to condoms, and different types of contraception will hopefully reduce those high rates of pregnancies and STIs or HIV," she said.

She plans on distributing the condoms at events held during National Public Health Week in the UC and around campus.

  • Meet Henry Rodriguez, a Theatre Design and Technology major set to graduate in May! He’s made his mark on UNC’s program with his projection work, including selecting, pricing and installing a new projection system to handle the creative vision of UNC’s theatre department.

Henry loves two things about his chosen profession: first, the magic. Projection, he says, can shape and shift the way you see something. He can point a projector at the door, and it can become an 18th century cottage door or a steel vault entrance; it can shimmer or bend or disappear. He quotes Arthur C. Clarke: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”

Second, he loves the hard-working sense of community in theatre.

“My favorite productions are not the ones that go well. My favorite productions are the ones where everything goes wrong, and you make it happen anyway,” he says. “That, to me, is what theatre is.”

He emphasizes the mentorship relationships that have helped him get to where he is, especially with UNC faculty members.

“I can trace back everything I have done to the people who have graced me with their time,” he says.

UNC doesn’t have graduate students in the design and tech program, so Henry has already worked as the lead designer on five mainstage productions. He also develops his skills nearly every break, often in his hometown of Las Vegas. He’s been a pyrotechnician at a massive EDM festival and an electrician at an opera house. He’s worked at and attended the Stagecraft Institute of Las Vegas, where he has studied a variety of skills including rigging, drafting, lighting and many more. He has learned from professionals at Cirque du Soleil and Disney. Next up? Entering an MFA program and creating more magic.

  • Meet Alex Silva! Alex is a Dietetics major, graduating this May, with a passion for helping people and destigmatizing food insecurity. “I guarantee you know at least one or two people who are facing food insecurity,” he says. “And it’s not something to be ashamed of.” Last year, he was the president of the Student Nutrition and Dietetics Association, where he oversaw the annual Cans for Candelaria food drive, a week-long series of events to benefit Weld Food Bank. The event gave him the chance to learn more about food insecurity, the variety of programs Weld Food Bank offers to the community, and how UNC students can both help and be helped by Weld Food Bank and UNC’s on-campus Bear Pantry.

Alex was married over spring break, and the two newlyweds will be adopting their current 12- and 13-year-old boys while continuing to volunteer to find families for teens in foster care. In addition to opening a food truck and working as a registered dietitian in a NICU, Alex’s goals include volunteering with low-income families and kids, teaching food-related skills such as cooking nutritious meals or managing Type I diabetes.
