  • Kaitlyn Chana, graduate student in the Master of Health Administration program, was awarded the 2019 CAHME/Dawn Gideon Foundation Scholarship. Before pursuing advanced studies in healthcare management, Kaitlyn worked as a television news reporter for Action News Jax. She came to see the power in storytelling and ultimately founded a non-profit organization called “ Reel Stories. Real People.” that uses video to tell positive stories of exceptional people in communities. She’s working on incorporating storytelling in healthcare to improve patient care. She has used her own experience as a survivor of eating disorders to develop an education film entitled "Empty" and guided curriculum that will help schools better approach issues around eating disorders and mental health. Congratulations, Kaitlyn!

  • #WheresOzzie? He's relaxing in at the Bamboo Garden!

The contest winner is @ searching_the_sea! Check your messages for prize pickup info. Congratulations!

The UNF Bamboo Garden was planted in 2009. It was developed and designed by Chuck Hubbuch, head groundskeeper. The garden was created as a meditative space with seating areas. Currently, this courtyard contains 18 species of bamboo. In total, 22 noninvasive bamboo species grow on campus including a native species that can be seen in the Sawmill Slough Preserve. A bamboo plant will grow for many years before it flowers for the first and only time in its life and then it dies. It is reported that all of the plants of a bamboo species will flower within a few years of each other. After flowering, they produce large numbers of small seeds that start a new generation. One of the plants, Dendrocalamus "Parker’s Giant" flowered on campus and around the U.S. in 2017. Fortunately, the groundskeepers found a seedling to replace the original plant; they planted it in August 2018 and it's already six feet tall. #loveUNF

  • Madison Meyer, UNF junior studying political science, recently participated in the National Collegiate Research Conference at Harvard University. This is the nation’s largest student-run undergraduate research conference which showcases world leaders in research. To our knowledge, Madison is the first UNF student to ever be selected to participate in this conference. She presented her data analysis which compared socioeconomic status and suicide mortality rates in the U.S. As one of the few students who didn’t attend an Ivy League institution, Madison made sure to tell everyone about the beautiful, unique school that UNF is. Madison said, “I never expected to meet such incredible people, learn from the most amazing professors and attend college in an environment that allows me to thrive with endless opportunities. UNF is a hidden gem!”
