  • “One thing you can’t get back is wasted time,” says Queen Hightower, spring 2019 graduate of Atlanta Metropolitan State College (AMSC). Hightower doesn’t waste time. However, time was taken from her. In August 2018, while at work, Hightower experienced a vehicle accident that left her unconscious for 10 days with no memory of the accident. That setback meant that she could not attend classes and pushed back her graduation from Dec. 2018 to May 2019. That time was lost.

Hightower sustained broken bones in various parts of her body, including her face and skull. Yet, she persevered. She was told that she may never be able to move the right side of her face. Yet, she smiles brightly. That smile easily comes to her face when she speaks about her time thus far at AMSC.

“I feel like Atlanta Metro is underrated. People don’t know how good of a school this is. You guys motivate me. I find people who have been in, not only similar situations like me, but people who are focused and are hungry and want something out of life,” she said. “Even though their situation may have been unfortunate, [Atlanta Metro] give[s] everybody a chance to get it together. That’s why I love it here.”

As a young mother of a two-year old, Hightower feels a huge responsibility to be great. Hightower will immediately pursue a bachelor’s degree in business administration here at AMSC. While finishing her bachelor’s degree, she will open an online store. And eventually wants to own multiple businesses and be a true entrepreneur. Her aspirations go beyond pursuing a career. She also wants to give back by feeding the homeless and providing multiple services to those that just need a hand.

Though delayed, Queen Hightower will not be denied.

On Mon., May 6, Hightower shared her story with Rose Scott of WABE's "A Closer Look". To listen, click: http://ow.ly/9CdO50u5Bdn.

  • When the Atlanta Metropolitan State College (AMSC) class of 2019 graduates on May 3, they will hear from the institution’s leader for over 12 years, Dr. Gary McGaha who is retiring this summer. After working more than 25 years in the University System of Georgia, McGaha announced his retirement on March 13.

“President McGaha has left a lasting impression upon the institution and those that have studied, taught, and worked here during his tenure,” said AMSC Registrar Sheldon Woods, who is in charge of commencement. “We are honored to hear him address us during his last commencement as president. We know that we will be inspired to carry on the tradition of excellence here at Atlanta Metro.”

This year’s commencement will honor 294 graduates from summer and fall 2018 and spring 2019. With this commencement, McGaha will have conferred more than 3800 degrees while at Atlanta Metro.

When reflecting on what it means to him to be the commencement speaker at his last ceremony as president, he said, “Giving the commencement address to the 2019 graduating class is an excellent way of saying goodbye and bringing my presidency at Atlanta Metropolitan State College to closure. My job as president has been the stewardship of academic excellence and the service that AMSC provides for all of its customers. The 2019 graduates will carry this excellence into perpetuity.”

Commencement exercises will take place on Friday, May 3 at 10:15 am in the Physical Education Complex, building 700 on the campus of Atlanta Metropolitan State College. For more information, visit: www.atlm.edu.
