  • On Tuesday, Feb 19 @ 12:15, Cypress Hall Room 274, Brian Moorehouse and Erin Kirksey will practice presenting their panel papers to a faculty audience. This will be their gear-up run for their first conference presentation on Friday, Feb 22!

Dr. Emily Dowd-Arrow and Dr. Betty LaFace are taking these second-year British Literature students to the 45th annual meeting of The Southeastern American Society for Eighteenth Century Studies (SEASECS), where they will be the only Undergraduate Panel presenting their original research. The theme for conference is "Changing Times, Changing Seasons: The Eighteenth Century in Flux."

The title of the panel, “Breaking Down Walls, Building Bridges: Discovering the Eighteenth Century in 2018,” speaks to the process of developing individual, scholarly engagement between the student of today and the texts of the past. Erin Kirksey will present her essay, “From Courtesan to Casting Couch: Unleashing Female Power in Eliza Haywood’s Fantomina.” Brian Moorehouse will present his essay, “’Fake News’ and the New, Old Fights of Today: How Eighteenth-Century Periodicals Established ‘Truth’”. Our last panelist, Carlton Maloy, will be unable to present his paper, “Why We Need ‘The Dutch Lady’: Breaking Through Boundaries in Eliza Haywood's The Female Spectator”. Dr. Dowd-Arrow will read his paper on his behalf.

This student panel was awarded The MARTHA F. BOWDEN TEACHING PRIZE, an award of $1000 given to the best undergraduate panel proposal for the conference, with the funds to be used to support the students pay for travel.

If you know these students, please take a moment to congratulate them!! And, if you can come support them for their practice panel Tuesday, Feb 19th @ 12:15 in room 274—please join us!
