  • Meet undergraduate researcher: Ibsa Debela ๐Ÿ‘‹

Opioid abuse in the United States often leads to death. This study examines various factors that could have an influence on the abuse of prescription opioids across the 50 states.

โ€œThe research is personal for me because one of my family members got into a really bad car accident two years ago and they had to put her on opioids for about two months. She became somewhat addicted to opioids because she found herself wanting more and more of it and she didnโ€™t know why. Luckily she was able to recover from it. This is a topic that needs to be studied more because it affects the entire country and society as a whole.โ€

Tuberculosis, a bacterial infection, is a devastating disease that is responsible for one of every seven deaths throughout history. Together, their research is focused on a biodegradable implant that delivers a more effective antibiotic to the body.

โ€œA third of the worldโ€™s population currently suffer from tuberculosis, and the problem is that many strains of the disease are now becoming drug resistant. Weโ€™ve taken an existing drug and repurposed it so that it works again and works even better than it did before.โ€ โ€“ Marcus Diaz

  • Meet undergraduate researcher: Joshua Reed ๐Ÿ‘‹

Joshuaโ€™s research is focused on the implementation of a smart city. Although this concept might not be new, Joshua says advances in technology are now allowing this concept to become feasible.

โ€œMy research follows the history of smart cities, from the first recorded use of smart city concepts in 1960s San Francisco to the present day. What I found is that a lot of it doesnโ€™t actually involve full-on computer science concepts. Itโ€™s often just more efficient policymaking that makes the city more sustainable. The more people actually know about this movement, and not just the buzzwords, the more likely we are to reach outcomes that benefit everyone.โ€ โ€“ Joshua Reed
