  • Ke Kalahea is seeking layout designers, graphic artists, photographers, and news writers for the 2019-2020 school year. The student-run news publication for the University of Hawai`i at Hilo provides students with firsthand experience for those interested in journalism, public relations, and media production. Members work in a collaboration-based learning laboratory, developing their individual skill sets as part of the news team while engaging with the campus community at-large.

“Joining Ke Kalahea has allowed me to branch out as both a student and a writer,” says Rosannah Gosser, who is set to serve as the the newspaper’s editor-in-chief in the upcoming year. “I love how news writing has involved me in a more practical side of campus and precipitated my professional growth while still in school. It’s also been an avenue to meet people I never would have connected with otherwise.” Gosser is majoring in anthropology, and she encourages students of all majors to apply.

"Ke Kalahea is the pathway to my future; I would have never discovered a passion for journalism without our lovely team," says Clara Scheidle, an astronomy major who plans to utilize the skills she's learned working for the student news publication in order to pursue scientific writing post-graduation. "I’ve been so grateful to partake in all of the opportunities that Ke Kalahea has to offer."

Those interested in applying to Ke Kalahea may find applications at UH Hilo’s Campus Center office, located in Room 210 of the Campus Center Building. For more information about the position available, contact uhhkk@hawaii.edu. https://hilo.hawaii.edu/news/kekalahea/

Astronomers collaborated with renowned UH Hilo Hawaiian language professor and cultural practitioner Larry Kimura for the Hawaiian naming of the black hole. Pōwehi, meaning embellished dark source of unending creation, is a name sourced from the Kumulipo, the primordial chant describing the creation of the Hawaiian universe.
