  • Young scientists explored native and endemic insects and spiders found in Hawaiʻī and nowhere else in the world at the UH Hilo's ʻImiloa Astronomy Center’s Camp ʻImi-Possible.

The week-long program, “Fantastic Bugs and Where to Find Them,” took campers on an “insectigation” of curious creatures and their habitats. The center held two one-week summer camps, one in June and the other in July, for students from kindergarten to 4th grade. The camp engages elementary school students through hands-on activities unlike those found in a typical classroom setting.

  • #UHHilo graduate student Martha Kawasaki and her research team — ecology researcher Eben Paxton of the U.S. Geological Survey Pacific Island Ecosystem Research Center and UH Hilo Professor of #Biology Patrick Hart — are tracking Hawaiian stilts on O‘ahu using solar satellite tags to trace their movements through various habitat types.

Kawasaki presented her research on the Hawaiian stilt at the Hawai‘i Convention Center during the state’s 26th Hawai‘i #Conservation Conference.

O‘ahu is home to the state’s largest Hawaiian #stilt population, most of the which reside in #wetlands and #ponds. But as habitats grow scarce, it has been increasingly spotted in urban areas.

“They are showing some resilience to #climatechange, which is great,” Kawasaki said. “But that also brings additional exposures to threats.”

  • #UHHilo's Pacific Aquaculture & Coastal Resources Center (PACRC) is using native species of #shellfish to improve #waterquality at Pearl Harbor, the Marine Corps Base at Kāneʻohe Bay and in the Ala Wai Boat Harbor. The new project focuses on native shellfish species because of their deep cultural significance.

Native oysters can filter between 20 and 45 gallons of water per day. PACRC provides technical advice and produces the oysters and other shellfish needed for the project. The center also is working to develop seaweed for similar purposes.

PACRC’s director is Associate Professor of Aquaculture Maria Haws. Research Manager Daniel Wilkie is a former UH Hilo student. About 10 UH Hilo students, as well as recent graduates, are working on the native oyster project as well.
